We have a group of 8 going in 2 weeks. One of them just backed out (because of the COVID of course). I have tickets for Disney and US (which I JUST bought today!) as well as flights on Delta.

I searched the forum and the internet a bit but I'm hoping someone here can help me out? I'm going to see about canceling all of his stuff, and getting my money back.

The tickets also say "nontransferable" Has anyone had luck with that? I'm thinking if they won't give me my money back, could I find someone to go in his place.

Sorry... I'm in a bit of a panic mode right now.

Thanks in advance!

For the tickets I would recommend calling Customer Service right away with an "oops I accidentally bought 1 extra" - if it's within 24 hours you're more likely to get a refund.

On Delta unfortunately tickets are issued to a specific person and nontransferable means nontransferable - that's for security purposes, the name on the ticket has to match the name of the passenger. To get it changed requires a notary and is a pain - not impossible, but maybe not worth the effort in this case if that person can give you the $ for the ticket since the credit for the unused flight will be in their name and usable for a different trip if they want to take one.

For the theme park tickets, they are transferable before first use, no issues there.

Delta has a 24-hour risk-free cancellation policy. If you just purchased the tickets, you can cancel for a refund. If it’s been more than 24 hours, Delta will issue a credit in your friend’s name, good for one year from date of purchase and the change fee will be waived.

How about having your cancelled party member PAY YOU for their tickets? It's not like COVID popped up yesterday, this has been a known issue for MONTHS. Put the responsibility on the person causing the problem. Just my 2 cents, my bending over backwards for other people days are way behind me. Ain't got time for that anymore.

A lot of airlines are waving change fees.
I just changed a departure and arrival times on 2 different tickets that were purchased 2 weeks ago.
It was American though not Delta.

Okay! Now I'll vent! :)

I'm about as mellow as they come so I'm a little bothered. My wife on the other hand is LIVID!

Back story: My wife and I decide to go back with our 2 sons. The oldest (just turned 21) asked to bring his girlfriend, so we let the youngest (19) bring a friend as well. Well my 2 boys have 3 friends who practically live with us (or at least did before the covid). And when I mean live they would literally come home from school with our boys on Friday and not leave until Sunday night. And if it was summer, they would stay for weeks at a time, occasionally going home for a change of clothes or something. So this has been going on for years. So the dilemma there was that there were 3 of them. So how does my youngest pick 1 to go? And each had good reason to go (1 has never seen the ocean, one has never been on a plane, etc...) So my wife and I get to talking and figure, we have enough skymiles to take all 8 of us, the house will be about the same cost, the rental car, the same cost. So it was decided, we'll take all 4 of them with us 4! Each 'kid' only had to pay for their tickets to the parks. It was $500 per kid and you got airfare, car rental, rental house, 4 days at Disney, 1 day at Universal (add in 2 travel days, one day at the beach, and one day to chill.) you have and 8 night vacation for $500!

We've been planning this since February, and he has been sketchy for the last few months. The kicker and what's really setting me off is that I'm not sure he would have ever spoke up! We reached out today for his email address (to add him on the MDE), and that's when he replied to say, Oh I can't go! I'm worried about the people and the money.

I told him the money is gone! So don't worry about that (if that's truly your concern). I'd rather you go and I'll eat the $500, than you not go and I still eat the $500. He still said no. And I get it if you're concerned about the covid. I can't judge you for that, but when the F were you going to mention it!? We leave in 2 weeks!

Regarding the flights, if the person in whose name the reservation is will not likely use the flight credit in the next year, you might be better off waiting instead of cancelling the reservation now. (I'm assuming the reservation isn't currently refundable.) If the airline cancels the flight, or there is a significant schedule change, the airline has to offer you a refund instead of a flight credit. That's what happened when JetBlue cancelled the flight for my planned trip. And it's not just a JetBlue policy. The government requires refunds for cancelled flights and significant schedule changes. And airlines have been cancelling a lot of flights lately. You should perhaps check to see if there's a deadline to cancel and claim the flight credit

As for the tickets:

US has already started the refund
Delta gave me my miles and my $11.20 back.
I'm pretty sure Disney is a loss. I bought through Undercover Tourist and did the 4 day magic tickets (which were a HECK of a deal). But all 8 are basically 1 ticket. It looks like I would need to cancel the entire ticket and buy 7 new tickets. Well any 7 tickets you could find right now cost more that the 8 I already have. So I'm eating that! And yes! i will charge the kid for that (when he can pay). The other thing I'll look in to is if there is a way to transfer that ticket to someone else, they are date specific, but if I can find a way to transfer it, I'd rather do that then have it go to waste.

... on the upside, rental cars for 7 are WAY cheaper than cars for 8, and now each couple or person will have their own room at the rental house.

.......

Wow super frustrating for sure. Guess you can blame it on immaturity based on his age but still, pretty poor etiquette on his part. I recall we had a huge planned family reunion for going to Italy 5 years ago, it was gonna be a bunch of family going to visit relatives back in the old Country. Luckily for us when we started making actual room RSVPs and such about a year out most everyone backed out except for our immediate family. So all the old folks stayed behind and it was for the best most likely. But at least they spoke up, but they were also paying their own way so when it was time to part with real money that was the line they could not cross.

Glad it worked out. We've been there before! A group of 12 (maybe liquor involved) "Let's all go to Vegas!" and 10 weeks later, my wife and I are in Vegas with one other couple! :)

Pretty sure you can assign the individual ticket to someone else if you find an 8th. But also just want to say you are an amazingly generous parent and your kids are really lucky!

Don't let it ruin your trip though - have so much fun :)

Thank you for the kind words! I've never NOT counted my blessing. I'm lucky enough to be where I am (and I'm frugal) but I'm happy to share when I can.

This should probably be a new thread, but....

Is it possible to sell (or more likely give away) the extra ticket? My ticket is for 8 people, but they are good Valid: Sun, Sep 13, 2020 – Sun, Sep 26, 2021 . Right now we're booked for 4 of those days, one at each park. If we were doing the paper ticket my understanding we would all have to show up together to claim our tickets. But if we have magicbands could I assign the tickets ahead of time and assign/hand off the magicband to someone else to make reservations within that window of course?

Couldn't you go in MDE, Assign the ticket to yourself - probably after your trip since it won't expire until next year. Then if you dont use it, it will serve as a credit towards a new ticket for the next time you go.

Interesting, but they are date specific tickets. Do you think the credit would good forever?

And thanks!

This is in the Ticket thread:

If you have a NEW (never been used) ticket that you wish to SAVE:
an easier way to accomplish this (with no need to make a trip to Guest Relations)
is to create a "fake name" profile in your MDX account and transfer that new, unused ticket to under that "fake" profile.
Since that "person" will not be going into a park, that ticket will never be used.

In the future, when you are ready to use (or upgrade) that saved ticket,
you can transfer it to yourself (or anyone else in or connected to your MDX account.)
You can even use that saved ticket's value toward renewing an (or buying a new) AP.

In your case you can just wait to assign it until after your trip since its already assigned to the kid
