I need some basic gardening advice about daylilies. We just moved from Texas to Georgia and our new house has A LOT of overgrown daylilies. I have never had these in my yard and have no idea how to care for them. I assume their growing season is way gone...but I have no idea what I need to do to them. They obviously need to be split, but I'm not even sure if that is what needs to be done.

Thanks for any tips, advice, websites...whatever! I need it! Ha! :rotfl:

I just dig them up and break the clumps into pieces. They are incredibly forgiving and seem to take a bit of abuse. I have a patch that gets overgrown becasue I have so many in that area, so every few year I thin them out and until this year I have transplanted as I divided.

Daylillies are a great first flower to deal with. They're so forgiving. As Nancy said, just get in there. Grab a shovel and start digging up the clumps. You'll see the risomes (sort of like a bulb, but it looks more like a ginger root) when you get in there. Just separate the larger ones and replant. It'd very, very hard to do it wrong.

They are the best plant to divide. I have not been able to kill mine. The only problem I have with them is that I find them addicting! I have not met one I did not want. I cannot seem to get rid of any once I divide them, so I have a lot of them.

DH has a mild obsession with daylilies.
I asked him, and he had the following references for you:

"Daylilies for the Garden" by Graeme Grosvenor
and
www.oakesdaylilies.com (He says there's all kinds of info on how to care for them.)

Good luck!!!

I just went to the website and this is a nightmare for a daylilly fanatic! I could spend hours checking them out and a fortune purchasing them. I am planting shades of pink and nearly white in my front yard to compliment a burgandy metal roof and darkish grey siding. There are plants here I have never seen before!
