I've been doing tons of research, been there once before with my hubby but this trip is different. It's a surprise trip for my Mom who's turning 70 so the trip will be totally different since I'm on the go go go, I'll need to consider all the walking for her.

I'm thinking of either the following hotels which I narrowed it down to:

Mirage
MGM Grand

(I had NYNY and Monte Carlo on the list but have axed those, also had TI but that is under construction right now and Paris but she said she doesnt really like the "city" hotels, Paris, NYNY, Venetian etc)

I know Mirage is midstrip, but I'm thinking she'll also want a pool day during the day and maybe a show at night, some downtime. MGM grand I've read you can walk a ton just to get TO the strip but their pools are huge and fabulous... So torn right now ...

Any feedback would be so helpful or new suggestions
Thanks

Me and DH stay at the Desert Rose which is located right behind Hooters and across the street from MGM, NYNY. They are all in walking distance. They have 1 and 2 bedrooms, pool, Jacuzzi, free breakfast everyday. Full kitchen, laundry room , gym. It is quiet. I always use the deuce bus system up and down the strip as well. They also have BBQS if you want to buy groceries.

A vote for the Mirage. No where near as big as MGM. We have stayed there on our last 3 trips to LV. You are just across the street from the Venetian plus a tram will take you to TI.
The one front exit (by Starbucks not the lobbey)is close to the enterance of the Forum Shops.
If walking is an issue taxis are easy to get. Plus there is a bus that goes up and down the strip. Cheaper but not quicker.

I'm also deciding on a resort for upcoming trip that had NYNY, MC & Mirage on my short list. Didn't know there was construction @ TI.

Curious why you axed NYNY & MC off your list, know there is some construction in the area.

Might want to consider which program is your favorite in Vegas Mlife or TR and look @ what promos you might qualify for @ those properties. Currently, Mlife has good rates with resort credit promotion available to those who have sailed Royal Caribbean (details on their website).

Seemed like we walked for a half hour from the strip to the monorail station @ MGM. I'd be careful which bldg. you'd book there if you have concerns re your mother. Although have been told we should seriously consider the west tower balcony rooms as one of the towers is very close to poolscape.:confused3

We've stayed at the Mirage and thought their pool was pretty fabulous. IMO, it's also in a better location than MGM.

I'd go with the Mirage. MGM isn't just huge, it's absurdly huge, even for Vegas. The pool at the Mirage is really nice, the casino is easy to navigate, and it's right next to the Forum shops at Caesars. I love the location. The area that is under construction at Treasure Island is their water area at the front, and it's more towards the Fashion Show mall. We are going to the Mirage in May and I have no concerns about the construction noise.

I went to Vegas for yhe first time in Nov & stayed at the MGM & ive never stayed anywhere that I had to walk so much in my life... its like a small amusement park.. not a great suggestion for your situation. Plus it is extremely smokey & they try to drownd out the smoke with this very strong air freshner. When we first arrived we could smell the perfumy smell from outside the hotel & our thoughts were some womans wearing way too much perfume (the essence of french *****) so to speak but little did we know it was the scent of the hotel... not a great place to stay imo.

Oh your right the walking is bad at MGM ... To your room a long walk, to eat a long walk and I'd you want to elk to another hotel your beat before your even out of the hotel. I'm not a fan of the hotel personally.

Can anyone suggest a hotel for a Sat night in Aug. We are flying into Vegas (me, DH, ds 19 and dd16) We are only doing this because dh & ds want to go to the Shelby museum and we will spend some time on the strip (not gamblers). We are leaving the next day for San Fran, LA, San Diego and Disneyland and then flying home from San Diego. I have a strong allergy to cigarette smoke so prefer a non smoking hotel. We will have a car so as long as it's possible to park somewhere near the strip we don't mind staying off the strip but not sure where it's safe. Would appreciate any advice!

The Strip itself is pretty safe. You have people from around the world carrying large amounts of cash, so Las Vegas Metro Police is absolutely swarming the area looking out for assorted stuff.

Maybe a place like the Signature at MGM Grand? It's a combination condo-hotel complex without any gambling. They might also have dining credits at the MGM Grand, which would mean having to run the gauntlet of smoking areas.

I tried to book a random Sat night in August and got $300. They have cheaper for AAA members.

There are going to be cheaper options, but not necessarily if you're looking for a place that's nonsmoking.

I have to agree the signature at mgm grand had way less smoke than the other hotels. Just dont enter through the casino/ MGM & you should be fine. I stayed here for 5 nights & really liked it. I cant stand the smoke either... I booked my hotel through southwest. It offered a good deal. A room with a kitchenette & sunken bath jacuzzi with a free meal credit.

Another option would be Vdara. It's also operated by MGM-Mirage and is a non-gambling hotel, but with some dining options. It seems like the non-gambling hotels these days are mostly nonsmoking.

And here's a compilation of 7 nonsmoking places in Vegas:

And a discussion.

I would note that many of these places won't be cheap. Gambling subsidizes the room rates at the casino-hotels, so that's where you're going to find the best prices. They are starting to restrict smoking, where it isn't allowed except on the gambling floor by state law, but some people ignore that, and the smell still makes its way.

Hampton Inn in Las Vegas is non smoking. They have several locations in the valley but there is an airport location.

OP I would pick the Mirage- it is in a nice central location and close to the new shopping/dining area The Linq very nice clean controlled (lots of security).

Another vote for the Mirage. I know a lot of people think that it's older and not up to par with the new hotels, but it's very comfortable and a great location. The tram to TI is right there and the Venetian is right across the street. We loved the Lion Habitat too. I think your mom would really enjoy it too! It's a little smaller and more cozy (as cozy as Vegas can get...;)
