I can't decide how to finish my queen of hearts costume. I have 2 versions pinned and took pics. So do you think version 1 or 2. I can't decide, but I am leaning towards 1.
I like the details on the 3 hearts on #1, but I think it looks more "finished" with the hearts running down the sides on #2. #1 looks, to me, like there's something missing without the hearts going down the side.
when i do the embroidery hearts in the middle, and the edging down the front it looks a little busy. I did the embroidery last night, and found the edging on clearance at jo-anns today, so hence the dilema.

I can't see it clearly in these photos -- does the dress have a two-tiered skirt, or is that a pleat formed by the edges of the front panel?
Of the two, I like #1 better, but I'm not sure that it's the very best version possible, either.
IMO, the edging all the way around the white panel of #2 makes it look for all the world like Alice's pinafore, but with hearts. It makes the costume look WAAAYYY too innocent and childlike for the Queen of Hearts. I think that if this is an adult costume, you would want to try to steer away from the pinafore impression.
That's Vandyke lace edging, and I think that it might work best in a way that you haven't tried (or at least have not shown us) -- by sewing it onto the underside of the hem (all the way around) so that it shows not against the white fabric, but against the skin.
I thought I had posted this earlier..... I agree that the best part was the heart lacing in the puff sleeve. You need to incorporate that in the design.
Also, I agree that it really looks like Alice's pinafore and you should try to steer it away from looking like that.
I like #3!
I just finished my Queen of Hearts costume this weekend, too! I hope you are not going to MNSSHP on October 15 or 18, because you will show me up by a mile! Great job! BTW, several of on-line costume sites have a fun QoH crown for only $12.99.
