I have no idea what Im getting myself into....

I dont know where to buy a mattress! I cant beleive the prices!!! ZOWIE! :scared1:

Yes, I will admit to having had hand-me-down mattresses my entire life. <sniffle> Im so ashamed!

Where do I go? Anyone in Chicago know of somewhere they use?

We bought the first mattress of our own last year, at Boscov's.

Our old mattress was purchased by DH grandparents when we moved in to our first apartment, in 1989! It was hard to decide what we wanted based on what we could afford. And after 15+ years, anything was going to be better than what were were sleeping (uncomfortably) on. We got a super deal on a Euro-Tex pillowtop floor model that was on clearance at 50% off.

Now is the time to shop - new models are being shipped and the old ones discontinued.

Lots of those discount bedroom superstore places sell the exact same mattress as at expensive department stores for less than half the price.

We found a mattress at the bedroom superstore for less than half what the mattress wherehouse had it for, then the mattress superstore gave it to me for even 10% less. They grumbled, but they did it.

So, we got a $4000 mattress for like 1700, which was still a lot.

Honestly though, I don't think it is any better than my old one that was cheap. My son sleeps on a 100 mattress that was mine when I was a kid and it is more comfortable and in better shape than our 2 year old $2000 one.

Good luck!
