I'm making pulled pork "barbecue" in the crock-pot for our picnic tomorrow. I know someone who make a beef bbq without a tomato based sauce, but I didn't get her recipe before she went on vacation. Does anyone on the DIS have a non-tomato/bbq sauce recipe for pork? I will take a bottle of prepared BBQ sauce as a condiment for the sandwiches.

So far I have beef broth, cider vinegar, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce. I'm just not quite sure of the proportions.

Sorry, when I make BBQ it's always w/a tomato based sauce. However I know one big secret to a good BBQ is slow cooking it and it sounds like you're doing that right by using the crock pot. Good luck!!

Normally I make hamburger bbq (sloppy joe) on the stove top and never have to measure, just add ketchup, mustard and brown sugar to taste. I think I've concocted something on my own for the pork. I used a can of beef broth, then mixed together 1/4 cup cider vinegar, 1/4 cup of Worcestershire and 1/2 cup of brown sugar to almost cover about 6lbs of pork. Hopefully I didn't go over-the-top with the flavoring.

I know this is too late, but I'll answer anyway. I don't have a recipe, but I know I ate lots of "North Carolina Pulled Pork" when I took a trip there. It was a vinegar base and served with BBQ sauce on the side. Maybe an internet search under that name would work.

Success with the recipe I created. The roast (6 lbs) cooked on low for about 12 hours and was mighty tender for shredding Sunday morning. I made sauce from about half of the juices, added about 3 tsp. of flour to thicken a little bit and added back to the pork. (I pulled the pock to a platter to pull and poured the juices into a the Pampered Chef large batter bowl.) The crockpot was turned off for almost three hours, from the time I pulled the pork until we reached Knoebels, and then returned to low a half hour before people started eating.

Half our gang got to eat before we returned to our pavilion, and much of the pork was devoured...the other pot of hamburger BBQ hadn't been delivered yet so it was the only main dish there.
