We bought an IPOD NANO directly form apple . Placed the order by phone on Saturday am and just received it today! We got 20.00 off for the student discount (yes my 3rd grader was fine) and free shipping and free engraving. The number is 1-800-myapple. I was really having a tough time finding these in any of our local walmart/target etc stores. They were all sold out, but as it turned out buying direct was quicker and cheaper, plus the engraving looks nice too. Hope this helps someone!

I am curious, the website clearly indicates that that your child would not qualify. Are their phone order standards more lenient?

I ordered through Apple and got the University Staff discount (I really am employed at a University). I just had to indicate that I was qualified, but they did not require any proof.

Out of curiousity, would you mind telling me the total price.

DSs are wanting the Nano, and at this point I don't think we can purchase them at the prices I've seen.

Amazing isn't it!? I did the same thing last Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving) night online about 9:20. Received it engraved on Friday the day after Thanksgiving. All without fighting a single crowd!

My first phone call when I was just calling to get price quotes said my son did qualify, I then hung up, talked it over with DH and called back. The second person told me that he (therefore we) did not qualify for the student discount. So I hung up and called back a third time, gave same information and then qualified. They did not require any proof for those of you that may be worried. Just the name of the school and the zipcode of school.

I paid 229 for the 4 gb. The 2 gb was 179. The shuffles were I think 79. Just add tax. We went ahead and did the 4 gb which was really only 30 bucks more than any in store prices I found, but 500 more songs. I think our tax was 11 or so. The most fascinating thing to me was that I only ordered it on Sat and it got here on wed engraved and all!!

Good Luck!1

Do you have to call for the student discount or can this be done when ordering online?

You can order on line, go to apple . com and click on the education tab at the top of the screen.

I ordered my 30GB Ipod Video on Monday through the Education discount online $269. According to Fedex its supposed to be delivered on Friday - do they really ship from Shanghai China?!

I ordered mine over the phone, 'cause I still had some questions! I don't remember where it shipped from, sorry threw the box away!

Yes, it really comes from Shanghai! DS got one when they first came out and that's where it shipped from. He loves his but the case shows the scratches easily. He got the black one.

I wondered about that. Do you think the white would be a better choice?

I called and found out you can also get the education discount in their local stores as well. This will work out even better for me because I can drive across the river to Oregon and avoid sales tax. No free engraving in the stores though. They did tell me you can have it engraved anywhere for about $10...so I would still come out ahead as I'm looking to purchase the 60GB Ipod.

I bought the 4gb Nano - ordered it online for $249. I also purchased the 2-yr warranty for $59 because after researching the Nano - I think we may need it. I ordered a clear plastic case for $20 from another retailer. I also purchased the Nano lanyard/headphones from Apple - but, I returned them when I saw how cheesy they are and read some reviews that the Nano would just fall off the headphones while wearing them. I still need to buy a wall charger. Target has the Apple wall charger for $30 - same as Apple.com. It is an investment - but, my 13yr carries her discman everywhere and she has earned a big present this year;o)

We are getting the 30 GB one for Christmas from my parents. My mom is using the education discount through the Apple site (step-dad is a college prof.) - thanks for the heads-up on that deal!

I'm so excited! Are there any must have accessories? I plan to use mine when I go walking. What's the best way to carry it (armband, belt clip, ???) I've never had an iPod before (or any other MP3 player) so I'm clueless!

Just so you know, you can add on the service plan at any time in the first year. They have a crappy "ask one question in the first 90 days" deal, and after that, it's like 49 bucks per question. So if you have a question after the first 90 days ( I only know for sure about the NANO) you should just buy the service plan. You can get the service plan and the accessories at the student discount too!!!

I bought the mini last Christmas with the student discount. It was a great deal.
