Help! Father’s Day ideas with weather not great

We arrived for our DL trip yesterday, and are spending our first couple days in a rented home on Balboa Island before heading to the park part of our trip. DH loves the beach and so that had been our Father’s Day plan-beach, maybe rent surf boards, and then grill steaks tonight. But now it’s cloudy, and looking to be just in the 60s. Any other ideas of a fun, low key way to spend the day?

Unfortunately, been there done that.

How far do you want to go? The LA Science Museum has a Space Shuttle Endeavor exhibit plus lots of cool stuff. I will be doing that next Saturday with DS23. Trying to think of inside activities for you!

That's not really uncommon for the Southern California coast. I just find it too cold most of the time, being from Texas. Interior gets much warmer. Like @HydroGuy said, head to the LA Science Museum. The shuttle exhibit is very good and emotional. Hope you have a good Father's Day!

We are pretty hardy beach goers-we live in Oregon and he’ll surf there-but this is a little chilly for lying on the beach with kids.

The science center is a great idea! And maybe he’ll decide to just relax before I subject him to grueling park commando time.

With it being so cool today you might want to do something else, and then hit the beach towards the end of your trip when it warms up. The Science Center is a great idea. Another fun/interesting outing would be to visit the San Juan Capistrano Mission, about a half hour south of Newport Beach (maybe a little more?), and have lunch down there. If you do head up to Los Angeles and hit the Science Center, there is an IMAX theater with interesting films, and the Museum of Natural History is also right there. I would recommend going to Olvera Street for dinner, but might be busier than usual since it's Father's Day.

LOL, that would have been my #2 suggestion. I paused when I realized it was Sunday today and not sure if that would be a draw back or not.

So far, we haven’t gotten farther than walking around Balboa Island, buying doughnuts, cooking breakfast, and watching World Cup. He seems happy as a clam so maybe this is as far as we get :). Weather getting better-close to 70 now and sun peeking out. The mission would be fabulous and perhaps more manageable than a drive into LA today.
