Does anyone know the exact distance in mileage/feet from the BCV to the IG entrance to Epcot? I'm taking my 72 yo Mom in a few weeks, and she accepted "about a 5-10 minute walk" until some "friend" of hers ("friend"???grrr) came back from WDW and said "Oh, you'll be walking all day to get to Epcot!" So now poor Mom's not so sure about this. Please can anyone help me by supplying her with an exact distance?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I jotted this down in a text file, except I can't find the original source. It was probably from Caskbill's Pathways post, but I can never seem to find that again ever since the search feature was limited.

From BWV to the Epcot Int'l Gateway is 0.36 miles.
I know BCV is even closer, so it should be a bit shorter.

Was that friend Tim Conway in his old man role. The one who takes quarter inch steps???

As mentioned, the measured distance from the bottom of the steps at BWV to the IG is 0.36 miles. I never measured the distance from BCV, but from the image below it appears to be just a little over half the distance as from BWV to IG, so best guess is slightly over 0.18 miles, or probably about 350 yards (3.5 football fields).

That's from the lobby area of BCV (not BC) . Be sure to take the shortcut and not go through the BC lobby which is a lot further.

For the shortcut, exit the BCV, go left, go under the canapy on the left, then go up along the side of the BC wing, and go out the small gate that connects to the walkway that goes around the lake, and goes to Epcot's I.G.

I presume once you get to the entrance your plan is to get a wheelchair or ECV? If not, just walking around Epcot will be too much for her. The measured distance of one loop around the Epcot lake is exactly 1.0 mile.

(The red line is from BWV and the green line is approximately from BCV. Note that the satellite image was taken before BCV was built, so the green line is approximate location based on the existing BC building)

Hope this helps

Hey, thanks for the laugh! I used to love Tim Conway in that part.

The original Pathways Revealed threads were posted in 2001 and now are located under an archived section of the DISboards. The search feature does not search the archives.

The 3 posts on theme park distances are lost for good, only the DVC reports remain. None of the photo links are good any longer so none of those links remain. But the text of the original posts is still good, and the links between the individual posts still works.

Here's a LINK to the initial post, the path from OKW to DD. From there you can link to the other reports.

Which begs the question, "What's the plan when she actually gets IN Epcot???"

Why can't you just walk from the BCV through the BC lobby and out to the dock, where she can catch a boat to the IG entrance? Is there some reson it has to be walked? With the distances I usually rack up walking around Epcot, I'd never walk from my hotel if the boat was available.

Ride the boat. The walk isn't awful, we did it when we were there, but there is no need. The boat is so nice and relaxing. It is covered too. Seriously, save her feet and yours.

IMO, the walk to the dock is just as long (if not longer) than the walk to the IG. Look at Caskbill's map (link in his post). Look how far that dock juts out into the lake!

Best wishes -

the boat is further away than IG.

call ms - have them add a wheelchair to your reservation.

when you check at the front desk - ask for a wheelchair - this is the push kind - so be prepared to work....

they are free!!!

they also have the ECV - but these are not FREE. I don't know what the cost would be for a week rental.

Well, getting to Epcot is the easy part....it's getting to the room that is the problem. I think we were 3.5 miles away!! ;)

If your mom has a hard time walkig, perhaps you should consider renting an electric scooter for her for the week. I think there is a medical equipment company down there
1-800-scooter, that will actually drop it off at the BCV so it is waiting for your arrival.

It's not that she can't walk. I'm sure that she'll be fine. It's just that this "friend" now has her wondering if Epcot is really reasonably close to BCV, as I said,or, as this "friend" suggested, I'm telling her a story, and when Mom sees how far it "really" is (according to this "friend") she'll be walking all day to get there. I just want facts and figures on how far it is. Less than 1/3 of a mile should give her a feel for it. Or maybe if she could see it on a scale map-anyone know where one of those it?

even if you think she will be fine - get a wheelchair from the resort.

Epcot can be tiring on anyone - at 72 you don't want her to pass out - sorry...

besides the wheelchair can help you carry stuff - I would definitely bring water for her.

the type you push is free - so I would just get it - she may not need - but she might.... :goodvibes

IT BEARS REPEATING - YOU GAIN NOTHING by going to the boat in terms of reducing the walking...you INCREASE the amount of walking by taking the boat...

ALSO what time of day are you going...if it is before 11 am when you get inside the IG you still are a LOOOOOONG way from any attraction which is open....

A LOOOOONG way...if it is the morning consider driving to the EPCOT main lot, ride the tram and enter thru the front....then you can walk out the back to the BCV and go back for your car later without your mom....this will minimize the amount of walking if she does not have to walk back to the car...or to and from the hotel....

I believe there is a slight uphill grade also to consider which you can bypass by taking a path way to right as you go towards the IG. Check your car odometer at home and measure something she relates to for the .18 mile or less that it is. It definitely sounds like a perception problem based on her "friends" misinformation. There are plenty of 72 yo's out there that can go the distance but just worry about what the distance really is. It sounds like she just worries that she will spend the whole day getting there and then be too tired to enjoy it, not that she can't get there. Just think how happy you will be to be the one who had the correct information.

That small bypass that goes pass the incline only works if you're coming the long way, from BC/YC, not if taking the shortcut from BCV. When taking the shortcut, you enter the main path at a point already passed the entrance to the bypass. You enter near the 'T' intersection where the other main path goes toward BW. When you exit the gate next to the BC wing, there is very little incline left to walk. You begin the decline section of the path almost immediately.
