I'm type 2 diabetic and the Dr. said I should do the south beach diet. About 2 1/2 yrs. ago I did the Atkins and joined a health club and lost 30#s. My blood sugars went way down. Well, guess what? Yes I put 25#s back on and my sugars are back up. I'll be 48 next week and he said by the time I'm 55 I'll be on insolin if I don't get it down. He said alot of his patience find it much easier to do the south beach than atkins. What is the big difference between the two. I have the video tapes and books for atkins. What can I add in or change so I don't have to go out and buy all new books if I don't have to. I go to TOPS but the meetings are not real motivating and the weigh ins just keep going up and down. WW is too much out of my pocket. $4 compared to $40 and month. I would appriciate any help I can get from you Dis friends. :listen: :listen:

Thanks alot,

Pam

I never did the South Beach diet, but I am diabetic. It was discovered 7 years ago. Four years ago, I lost about 60 pounds and was able to be completely off of the meds. My levels were uncontrolable, even with meds. I gained about half back, but still no meds. I am now exactly were I was four years ago and feel really good. I still have 40 pounds to lose for my goal and another 25-30 to be where the Dr. wants me.

I am grateful that I can control my levels with weight loss.

Sorry that I can't anwser the diet question, but wanted to give you support and encouragement.

You don't have to post there, but in the files & archives there is a summary of the SBD book as well as lists of approved things to eat. You will be able to read the differences, since you already know about Atkins.

South Beach Diet is NOT LOW carbs like Atkins. It is eating the RIGHT carbs and the RIGHT fats and fiber with a moderate amount of protein.

It was never intended to be a weight reducing diet. It was developed by a cardiologist (heart doctor) who was trying to get his patients to live till their next check up by unclogging their arteries, lowering their cholestrol & balancing their blood sugar levels. Adult on-set diabetes is one of the leading growing epidemics in AMERICA today vs. the rest of the world. The weight loss is simply a healthy by-product. The Dr. talks very much about Adult on-set diabetes in the book.

Our industrial machinery nowadays has processed and pulverized grains and carbohydrates down to almost non-nutritional values. They simply turn immediately into sugar in the body. Basically, these are called "simple" carbs because they are broken down so much even before the body digests it. There is a reason white bread has to be enriched - meaning vitamins & minerals PUT BACK in - they were pulverized & stripped out of the original wheat grains.

To use a gruesome analogy, it's like how the particles of the World Trade Center buildings were pulverized into such unrecognizable dust and body fragments relative could not recognise family members. How is your body supposed to recognised pulverized-beyond-recognition nutrients and do something useful with them?

The RIGHT carbs are what are known as Complex carbs, like whole GRAIN foods, ie. whole grain breads - like 7 grain bread, long grain & wild rice, bran, veggies with fiber and a low glycemic (sugar) index.

Whole Wheat should not be confused with whole GRAIN bread, because nowadays, even that is so stripped & pulverized, it has become a deceptive ad-word like "low fat".

The RIGHT fats are unsaturated fats, like those in nuts, tofu, etc., vs. saturated fats (artery clogging) in meats, dairy, etc.

None of this is NEW information. Complex carbs & unsaturated fats are taught in high school biology classes for years. :teacher:

South Beach Diet simply gives GUIDELINES on what are better things to eat and when, including 3 healthy snacks a day, to combat the sugar cravings that natually accompany a low blood sugar dip. We have become a society used to eating, picking & buying high, simple carb items, because of industrialization & advertizing. He's just helping us to start consciously picking BETTER carb & fat foods, vs. our badly programed choices.

Atkins allows eating unlimited fats (both saturated & unsaturated) and (almost) no carbs. He has his own research for why this is possible. :confused3

Personally, I think: You ARE what you eat. But this isn't supposed to be a thread on debating one diet vs. the other. Do your own research & decide which makes better sense to you. The point is for you to stablize your blood sugar & drop the weight. If you drop the weight, the diabetes may go away. :cheer2:

BTW: A lot of these new specially formulated "low carb" foods are high, high in fats. For SB dieters, check the labels. Again, SB is not LOW carbs. It is eating the RIGHT carbs and the RIGHT fats and fiber with a moderate (normal) amount of protein.

I tried South Beach a while back. I started by getting the original book. The recipes were so tasty! I then bought the cookbook. :stir: Even more tasty! :yay: The main difficulty I find is organizing my time to go shopping and to prepare my meals and snacks ahead of time. I have started phase I again this week and am hopeful that I can stick to it this time. Phase I is low carb, but it still stresses the importance of vegetables (most fruits are on the no no list). Phase I is only recommended for two weeks. The purpose of phase I is to rid you of your cravings for refined sugar. After phase I, you start introducing fruits and good carbs back into your diet. Once you reach your target weight, you advance to phase III. I recommend purchasing the cookbooks (they are reasonably priced at Amazon). The first book (blue cover) may explain the diet in slightly more detail than the cookbook, but if you want a lot of excellent recipes, the second one is very good. The third book also has a lot of tasty recipes, and it also gives tips on how to cut prep time. The recipes are much friendlier to those whose time is limited. The beginning of the third book also describes the diet. I don't really know the details for Atkins, so I cannot comment on the differences. Perhaps you can go to a bookstore such as Barnes and Nobles and look at the differences for yourself. I think the most important thing is to try and find a diet that you can stay on and that fits with your lifestyle. Good luck!

South Beach is a great diet, but I found it to be expensive and time consuming. My insurance company gives a discount on WW on-line. Good Luck.

Thanks alot for the info. I'll start reading up on it. I'll be :listen: for more helpfull info. Pam

I did SB to get rid of my carb cravings...it really worked. I am now just trying to make healthier choices. I may go back on SB, phase 1, for a couple weeks since I am in a stalemate with my weight. I did go through a day or 2 where I didn't feel 100% but it was liveable.

Prevention.com has a great overview of the program and listings of the foods for eat phase.

Thanks alot for all the info. I'll do some web surfing.

Pam, again I would like to say welcome. SBD is a great way of life. I've been on it 2 1/2 years now and I wouldn't go back. I have lost 60 pouns and countless inches. I went from a 14 w to a size 2. I'm a tiny person, so that has been the best thing for me. All of my bloodwork is better than it has ever been. GIve it a try. The plan can really be adapted to your lifestyle if you give it 100%!

I have been Beachin' for a couple of months now. I think once you learn how to make the healthy choices and what the guidelines are, it's fairly easy. I didn't get the book, I found all the info here:

I stay in the recipe & food section! :) Always great new ideas for healthy eating. Best of luck to you!

Pam, I'm on my 2nd week of Phase 1 and never did I feel hungry or deprived. The sugar cravings are completely gone. All the refined and processed food is out of the house.

Type II diabetes runs in my family too and my dr. said I needed to get my eating under control now before I hit my 40's where it's more likely to hit. Since I've started South Beach 11 days ago I lost 10 lbs. and I feel great! Lots of energy to exercise (do walking 30 minutes a day).

I don't know if your dr. agrees with mine, but at least 30 minutes of exercise a day is suppose to help those with diabetes or preventing it.

The site I visit is Ivillage.com message boards for South Beach Diet and those ladies are super wonderful and will answer any questions you have. They also belong to the expensive online site and share any new information that has come out on the program. I'll try to post a link to the site for you. It's my lifeline while I try to rid the bad habits that I had through my life so far. NO MORE!

Just cut and past that if it doesn't link up right.

Good luck and get healthy!
