Hey there. I have never tried decorating a cake before-- and would love help and imput. My DH's birthday is the 15th and I really want to make him a golf cake. I would love to surprise him and make it very creative. Any how to's or advice?

Im not too sure about how you do the icing-- where you get it, etc... and how to do decorations and stuff. I have no idea what icing is best or creamier, etc.

All help is appreciated!

Try looking at www.wilton.com. There are great recipes and decorating ideas there. You might also pick up a book at Michaels. They have beginner cake decorating books and all the equipment you will need.

There is a fun-looking cake in Tamily Fun. Best part, those cakes assume you have very limited cake-decorating skills, so they are generally pretty easy.

Here is the link: Golf cake

Make sure you post some pics!

I made one for my dad a few years ago. It said " Birthday Wishes Fore You" and I just bought a golfer set at Michaels to put on top. I did green and brown icing. It turned out very nicely.

thanks you all have been so much help! Cryssi I love the cakes that you do! ANy tips?

Thanks Maggie! :goodvibes

I was thinking that maybe you could do that hidden mickey sand trap. Make a round cake, cool, and round off the top edges with a serrated knife. Get the tubs of duncan hines whipped white frosting, and tint green. Frost the cake with the green. Take some more frosting and tint it a lighter green for the green (putting) area. Put some Nilla wafers in a ziploc bag and crush with a rolling pin. Make a hidden mickey indentation in your frosting and fill with the crushed wafers to make the sand trap. You can make a flag out of paper and put it on a toothpick or bamboo skewer, then put it on the cake!

Did that make any sense...?

I did a quick layout, but can't get to any photo hosting sites here at work. I'll try to upload it for you tonight...
