I rec'd an email on Friday from Gevalia coffee welcoming me to their service. However I never placed an order with them. I'm freaked out because the email contained my name, my old address (where I used to live over 2 years ago) and a credit card number with all of the numbers blocked except for the last four. The number does not match any of my credit cards. I called Gevalia and they weren't much help. The indicated the order was placed online and that the number was a Visa credit card. They couldn't tell me the name of the bank. They said they cancelled the order for me. I tried to speak to a supervisor, I tried calling back several times...nothing worked. I have a Disney Visa with Chase and I called them...they show no new cards opened under my name. I called the general Visa corporate number and they can't do anything for me since they have no access to personal financial info. I'm afraid someone is trying to apply for a credit card (perhaps an offer send to my old address) but without the bank info I am afraid there's nothing I can do for now. I printed my credit report yesterday and there's nothing suspicious, but new credit cards may not hit the report for 30 days or more. Does anyone have any ideas...what should I do next??? Thanks...

Eep! Almost had this happen to me but luckily my bank was able to resolve it before anything like this happened. Anyone know what law enforcement manages identity theft? Posting to bump this!

Contact all three credit bureaus, check your current credit and put an alert on your SSN so that if anyone tries to open an account in your name it will be flagged and you will be contacted.

Weird that they had your email address too.

I'd also put a forwarding address form in for your old address, with you name, old address and new address. Any mail being sent under you name to the old address will get forwarded to you for 6 months.

Also, there is a form you can fill out so that cc offers are not sent to you (it's similar to the do-no-call list but is for credit cards). I'd fill one of those out too.

Hope it works out.

PS. Any chance someone is sending you a pre-oaid gift and doesn't have your new address???

If the number doesn't match any of your credit cards then don't worry about being charged for the item. Sounds like Gevalis cancelled the order that was placed so I wouldn't panic. You could place a fraud alert on your credit file, but know that this can also make it difficult for YOU to get further credit.

General fraud alerts only last for 90 days so I would place one with a phone number. You only need to contact one bureau to place an alert - this is one of the rare things that the three credit bureaus share. I would also order all three reports (annualcreditreport.com if you haven't had a free report in over a year) and look through the inquiries in particular. This COULD be a case of mistaken identity but you never know.

If you check the inquiries, note that there are two type - those that do not count against you (prescreens, reviews and so on) and those that do affect your credit. If you see something unfamiliar and want more info, it's helpful to contact the company that places the inquiry more so that the credit bureau because they usually see little more than you do.

Good luck!

You know, something strange happened with that company and me, too.

We arrived home to find a "starter" package, including coffeemaker, on the porch.

The name was not us; the address was another number on our street.

I tried to find the street number to take it to him, but discovered that there is no such address.

I did a search on the property tax assessor's site to match an address to the name, but there was no such property owner.

I called them but they said their system was down and they wanted me to call back later.

When DH got home I asked him to call. It took about 20 minutes to get the lady to understand what was going on. She told us to keep the box. :confused3 She said that she credited the credit card number that was on file for that name.

Strange.

I've posted this story on here a few times but last Spring I had a similar thing happen. Initially we had several suspicious charges on our CC and they caught it and called us. We canceled the cards and got new ones. But then someone was ordering a bunch of items online using my email, name, address and other cc numbers. I didn't quite get why, but one company told me that the order had been placed with a "pop up" that promised a free Ipod or something like that if you ordered. It seemed they might have been ordering the product with my information, stolen cc numbers, and then having the freebie sent to them, but I am really not sure how that worked. I did put an alert on my credit report and filed a police report.

It was a hassle for a while to call these companies. Several products were shipped to me and I just marked them "Return to Sender--not ordered" and put them right back in the box. The biggest fallout was from the fact that they used my email address with these pop up ads so I was getting hundreds of spams a day as a result. I did manage to spend a few days going through the "unsubscribe" process and they stopped most of them. I now only get a few a week.

Thanks to all who responded...I will put an alert on my credit report and will be vigilant. I'm positive no one ordered coffee in my name as a gift or something. I've been searching the internet for issues with Gevalia and many people have had problems with accounts being opened without their knowledge and have then had problems trying to cancel the automatic credit card payments...i'll have to see what happens...
