Hi there ,

My husband and i are planning a trip to Disneyland for the holidays (Dec. 2 - 5), and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on hotels? Budget-wise we would need to be off-property. I already booked a room at the Portofino Inn and Suites, but I've recently read some less than stellar reviews. We don't need anything super fancy, but something clean and not smelly. Any suggestions would be appreciated, or if you can ease my fears about the Portofino that would be fabulous too!!!!

Well Portofino despite some bad reviews rates higher than the places across the street from the parks.

But if it were me I would cut that walk in half, probably save a little money. The places up the street near DL may not be as fancy or new, but are clean.

It might help you to look at this map and just search for the hotel's and deals. You can use a travel booking site or go to each hotel's individual site.

That's too bad about Portofino. I usually have that on my "recommend" list (hopefully it wasn't me who recommended it to you! ;P )
I think it's a fairly nice property. They do have good online rates that are hard to beat. Maybe you can catch a similar deal at Marriott Suites. Sometimes you can get a good prepay rate at the extended stay hotels: Residence Inn, Marriott Suites, Homewood, Embassy Suites. Or you could try Priceline.

I just ended up stumbling across it searching online, they had a good rate (at least i thought so) so i went ahead and booked. I didn't pay in advance though so I can still change if i decided to. It looks like a nice place. I'm starting to wonder if the reviews i read were just from people with really high expectations. Thanks for the help :)

You just never know what people's expectations are. I wouldn't call Portofino low budget, but with some of the lesser priced properties, sometimes it can be hit or miss.

I've never had a problem at Homewood Suites (our hotel of choice) or the 2 Residence Inns. If you don't need a suite, I'd suggest the Candy Cane Inn if you also don't need/want to be immediately near dining. CCI does have a light complementary breakfast. It's a pretty property and they have their own shuttle which may be useful during the busy Christmas season.
