Help changing door handle?

I'm trying to change the handleset on my front door. The latch is adjustable either 2⅜" or 2¾" One option is too short and the other is too long. If I do the shorter option the holes on the latch are right up against the edge of the hole in the door and if I put the handle on it, the part of the latch that sticks out isn't able to stick out anymore. The longer option just doesn't fit. What am I doing wrong? Is the handle just not compatible? I can't make new holes in the door because then I'd have a bunch of open holes.

Most are designed for two standards backsets. If it's some unusual backset (or whoever drilled the hole just didn't car about precision and then rigged something to work), it's not going to work unless you can find a specific replacement for that backset.

You might have a 2-1/2" though. This mentions that it's pretty standard for a mortise lock, although I'd think you'd notice something very different if that's what you had.

Locksets come in different standard sizes. You need to measure your current lock/holes/etc and then buy a new lockset that is compatible with that. Some locksets allow for a certain amount of adjustment. If yours happen to be some sort of custom door or lockset, you might look around online for other options made by that same manufacturer.

In some cases you also buy a replacement lock cyclinder if for example, you just moved in and want to have different keys then what the prior owner used. If you want to change the entire handle/mechanism/locks, then I would measure and search around for other options made by that same company.
