I'll have a day to spend in NYC after coming in from a cruise. (A Sunday) We'll be @ the Manhattan Cruise Terminal & hoping to catch a few sights.

I'm not really a city girl...more of a suburbs chick :thumbsup2

How far is 8-10 blocks really? Is it walkable or am I better off taking a cab? At what point are you better off walking than taking a cab? If I hop in a cab for 8 blocks, is the cabbie going to look at me like a Whack-a-Doodle? :lmao: Or would I be crazy to walk say 20 blocks. Sorry - I have no sense of distance when it comes to the big city. I figured with traffic (though there might not be much on a Sunday afternoon) it's probably faster just to walk.

What are the MUST SEE attractions for a couple of women on a weekend getaway. No Kids, No Husbands

Anything else I need to know for my 1st time in NYC?

There are streets and avenues (in non NY-speak, the streets go up and down and the avenues go across). If, say, you're walking from 44th street to 45th street, it's a normal city block. But if you're walking from 5th avenue to 6th avenue it's a much greater distance - maybe the equivalent to three city blocks.

I might walk 8-10 blocks but I'd take a cab for 20. Weather is a big factor here. If it's cold and windy, I'd cab it either way but if you get a nice sunny morning, maybe? I don't know where the terminal is or if there is any sightseeing to do walking so that's also a factor. If I had just the afternoon, I'd head to 5th Avenue and Times Square just to hang around and see a bit.:)

As for what to see, you and your friend should make a list: I will know I'm in NY when I see...
or when I'm in NY I MUST see...

Each of you list three things. Locate each of them on a map. If they are spread out and time consuming (Ellis Island and the Metropolitan Museum of Art) you may just get to the two things. But if they are Rockefeller Plaza, Fifth Avenue Shopping and St. Patrick's Cathedral, they're near each other and you could fit more in.

If you want a top of the building experience, it's usually much easier to get into Top of the Rock than the Empire State.

Shopping is generally better in SoHo and Nolita than 5th Avenue (unless you're loaded.)

Times Square is one solid mass of people with a bunch of touristy shops, so I'd avoid it this time unless you're seeing a show.

I'm far from an expert but I've been a couple of times in the last few years.

Just wondering..what will you do with your luggage? Are you overnighting somewhere in the city?

8-10 blocks is very do able in NYC! Enjoy!

That is very helpful to know. :thumbsup2 Thank You!

I'm thinking Top of the Rock is a definate on both of our lists.

We're not staying overnight after the cruise. It's a short one, so we'll only have small carry-ons. But I was considering a place called Schwartz, I guess they'll hold your luggage on a per hour basis while you sightsee. I'm still researching it a bit, and I'm open to suggestions.
