For height requirements on rides, does this mean with shoes on--tennis shoes could add an inch or so.
ALso, if a child is barely too short, are they strict on the requirement or is half an inch too short okay?

Normal shoes work. I have seen them make a child take the shoes off when they were wearing too thick of a sole/heel.

And if they miss it by 1/8 inch, they don't ride. And they will be rechecked several times in the line. They can make it at the front, but if they don't make it at the ride check point, they don't ride.

Yes, with shoes on. So pick shoes that add height if it's close. And if it's super close, it depends on the CM. YMMV.

thank you

we'll see how much she grows in 6 weeks
it is just a few rides she could not go on, and it will be fine

^^^ That is important to take into account. If the shoes add a lot of height, they may be asked to remove them to be measured. This happens now and then.

In our experience the measurements are right on or even veer a bit higher. Our daughter was 47 3/4 inches, seriously amost 48 inches by a few hairs at home and did not make it past the first height check for California Screaming. And, it really didn't even look close, LOL! She had on regular ol' Nike tennis shoes. Luckily we prepped her for not being able to go on it and checked as a "well lets just measure to be sure", so no big meltdown (thank goodness).

They use a piece of cardstock and if that will slide between your child's head and the measurement device, they do not get to ride. Their measurement devices are really above the actual inches posted though, so keep that in mind. My dd6 measured just over 48 inches at the Dr's office the previous week and she was not allowed to ride California Screamin'. It was very frustrating and upsetting for her as she loves roller coasters and the CM was very rude about it.

And before anyone starts talking about the safety devices not working properly if they are short by a sheet of paper, total height is not a good determining factor for the safety devices to fit properly. seated height would be much more effective. Some kids have long bodies and short legs and others have short bodies and long legs. it is body height that is more important to the safety - leg length should not factor in at all. My 6 year old has a longer body than her 8 year old sister - but overall height difference is 4 inches.

When we went my niece was 39 inches, 39 1/2 with her shoes on. We had her measured while at California adventure, and she was close to 2 inches under their "40 inch" measure, with her shoes on. We only measured her the once, but if the rest are the same, they must take into account shoes, or they don't know how to read a tape measure.

If the child is too short, even by a hair they won't let them on. And you have to be careful, because if it is close, on several occasions, on different rides, we made it past the first marker, only to be rechecked and not make it past the second. So even if they make it by the first one, don't get them too excited as they might not make the second one. This happened to us on Soaring, Gadget's and Goofy's Sky School.

I think they factor in shoe height when making the measurements, as DD I know is one height from going to the dr. and won't make it there for that height. Main thing is don't get their hopes up, it's so said to see them excited and then turned down.

Another thing, when we went with DD when she was 3 1/2 she was just a hair short of riding the 40" rides, so we made kinda a game of it, whenever she would see a height measurement she would get all excited and say "let's see if I'm tall enough for this one". She had fun doing it, and wasn't too bummed she couldn't ride it, other than jumping jellyfish, (of all things) haha. And when we went back the next year she would do the same thing and now she was tall enough for most, so she was even more excited that she grew :)

Have fun!

Big thanks to everyone sharing their stories. I had similar questions, since each of my three kids will be close to different height requirements (with the eldest wondering if he's tall enough to drive his own car at Autopia). The shoe issue was one I had been hoping would help us, but now I know to expect measuring devices higher than the posted height. It really does help one plan and talk to the kids realistically about what to expect.

My youngest DD has made the 42" rides since last August. In August, she was wearing her cowgirl boots (maybe and inch and a half heel - btw, nobody ever said anything about having her remove her shoes), but in the trips since, she's often been wearing tennis shoes (about an inch heel) and still measured fine for them. Yet, when they measured her at the doctor's office the following January, she measured 40.5". :confused3 At WDW, we had the opposite experience, my oldest DD didn't get to ride Expedition Everest, even though she should have been tall enough.

I think I'd tell the kids maybe, you'll just have to see if they measure up once you get there. There are no guarantees, regardless of what they are measuring at home.

my son was jsut to short for indy he was so sad, but this time he definatly gets to go on it yeahhh

When my daughter was 5yo, her first trip to DL, she got measured for Indiana Jones EVERYDAY we were there. Her cousins got to ride but she didn't and she didn't like that. This was the only ride that she could ride. DCA was open or really even thought of yet, Indiana Jones had just opened.

Soooooo......some of these posts r making me nervous.....my little one measures ahhhhh about 42 maybe a little taller with no shoes on.....she should have no problem getting on at least the 40 in rides then right???? I thought so b4 noow not sure with the whole there measurements r taller.

In our experience, the measures at Disneyland are right at the number without a shoes allowance (so, 40" is 40" with shoes on). We had a different experience at WDW, but no problems at Disneyland. People have reported problems with Jumpin' Jellyfish, but I can't really comment on that as that is one of the few attractions that nobody in my family has ever shown any interest in.

If your daughter is 42" barefoot, she'll probably be able to ride everything except Indy and Screamin'.

At 42" she should be fine riding 40" rides. But 42" rides might be iffy. Best bet is to just let her get measured at each ride and if she can ride great, if not then move on the next ride.

Ok NOW I am nervous about this height thing! We where all excited as my ds is right at 42 with out shoes and I will be REALLY disappointed when we go in 3 weeks if he can't make the rides!

I should add the one that we where looking at that looks like he may just make it or not is the Grizzly River Run...we where really looking forward to it with him!

My DD who is 7 and measured 42' with tennis shoes on with a measuring tape at home was not allowed to ride any of the 42" rides. Only once did she make it past the first check point, but at others she didn't even make it that far. I did what a PP did and made a game out of it, but it was disappointing that her brother got to ride with one of us while the other parent stayed with her. Of course though, this meant she got to buy extra stuff because I was so sad for her. Next time I guess.
