Another puppy issue - My Pomeranian puppy is 5 mos old. The vet has given us Heartworm puppy packs to give her once a month. The "treat" is a pretty good size chunk for her so we have to break it up. I can't get her to eat the darn thing. We've tried wrapping the pieces in cheese, turkey, coating it w/peanut butter. Nothing works, she won't eat it! Any suggestions on other types of heartworm medication we can try for her? I've read posts here where people have said dogs have gotten heartworms by missing only one month of meds. I don't want my puppy to get heartworms!

Call your vet and tell them. They can probably give you a pill to give instead.

They might even buy back the unused ones.

I've never had luck with trying to disguise the heartworm med as a treat.

I just open my dog's mouth and put the pill WAY in the back. Then I close her mouth and hold it shut for a second and she swallows it.

Ditto.

My dogs hate taking those pills also. I usually stick the pill in the middle of a spoonful of whipped cream or ice cream and hold their mouth closed briefly. It works.

I will have to call the vet and get a different type of med. The samples the vet gave us are suposed to be like a "treat". It's a very big square chunk like a piece of steak, but it's too big for her to eat all at once, so we have to cut it up and try to get her to take it. She doesn't want to eat all of it, if any, and the vet said she needs to eat the whole thing and all at the same time, not a little bit here and there.

I would much prefer to get a small pill and shove it done her throat, nicely of course! Do they make liquid type heartworm meds? My sister swears she gives her puppy the type of liquid med.you put on the nape of the neck once a month and it takes care of fleas, ticks and heartworms all at once.

Yes there is Revolution is does Heartworm and flea and tick, you put it on the back of your animals neck.

These are good suggestions. Last month when I gave Jasmine her HW medicine disguised in a lovely chunk of cheese, she ate the cheese and let the pill fall out. I was running all around the house making sure she got the pill the 2nd time. I am going to try the back of the mouth trick. Or I could have DH give it to her. Since she is convinced he is hers and I am "the other woman" she will do anything for him.

My dog loves her heartworm med (Heartgard). She knows where we keep it and when she sees us get the box out, she's sitting there waiting for her "treat". :confused3

My little doggie loves the Heartguard too. She scarfs it down.

When I have to give my Lab a pill or other medicine I take it out of the container and hold it in my hand like it's a treat. I say "treat" and Hunter starts drooling!:rotfl: I make him do a few tricks, like I do when I really have a treat. Works every time! He gulps his meds down without realizing mommy has outsmarted him!:joker:

When I was out of town I had my sister administer some pills that my dog was on for an infection. She has pets so is pretty used to making sure that they really swallow it. She was positive that he had eaten the pills with the treats.

When I got home and was cleaning house, I found those little pills ALL over the house. He must have saved them in his mouth to spit out later when she wasn't looking!

Pretty wily for a dog that was not smart enough to put more than his front paws and head out the dog door to pee!
