Healthy Living around the World Showcase ~ June 2016 WISH Challenge!

Question of the Day – June 2nd

We start our exploration in Italy.

600-italy.jpg

The advantage of virtual exploration is that we can pick whatever country we want to start in and don’t have to adhere to the normal entrances into World Showcase.

The reason for starting in Italy is that today is Italy’s Republic Day “Festa della Repubblica”, their national holiday. The day commemorates the referendum held on June 2,1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. The majority voted for Italy to become a republic and the monarchy was sent into exile.

So, this is a day when Italy celebrates a new start. On a far smaller scale, we should celebrate ourselves for embarking on our own journey towards a new and healthier life!

Yesterday we talked about about who we are and what our goals are. Today, tell us what makes this month a new start for you. What are you going to do different this month. Or are you keeping everything as it is? What is your plan for this month?

Oh wow I figured I'd be mostly alone with Japan as my tops. The shops have been the most memorable. I can't wait to take my daughter through there she is a big anime fan and therefore really into Japan and begs me to take her there. aww I wish I could the World showcase version will be doable. hehe

I'm still working out the plan details with some more changes that I can make habits. The exercise is going well and tracking food too but will work on nutrition more and more. I need to work on stretching more in the exercise department. Maybe bring back a nightly short yoga routine to just get all stretched and somewhat relaxed.

New month, new exercise plan. Since I only have a moment I'll just tell you quick.... it involves miles, squats, and planks.... not a lot of them, but enough to get me moving in the right direction.

Here I am in "Italy" during my Mother/Daughter 2011 trip!

I haven't been to Disney yet (going next year hopefully) but I want to explore Germany the most, and by "Germany" I mean "Karamel Kuche"

:rotfl2:I know the shop is very popular and I have indulged in some of their treats as well. However, as a German I can tell you that this shop is far from representing the true Germany! Caramel candy is really not a big thing here at all! That is what makes Werther's Originals so special: They are one of the only caramel candy that is popular here. And most Germans would have no clue what half of the offerings at Karamell Küche are!

I introduced myself above, so I will focus on my favorite place in all the lands:) World Showcase! I love world showcase. I love eating my way around the world, but sharing with others, don't worry;) I honestly do not think I can pick a favorite country. I love many for different reasons. Mexico has Margaritas, my favorite adult beverage. I loved the older version of the ride at Mexico (Rio del Tempo I believe), it was a bit cheesy but classic in my opinion. The Donald version is fine, but I'm always nostalgic for the originals. I love the movie at the American Pavillion, Via Napoli is my favorite between race meal place. They have a salad there that is light, but full of protein for recovery and I always have lunch there after Saturday 10ks to refuel for the halves. I haven't been to the Bakery in France in years because my son is allergic to milk and eggs. So as you can imagine, nothing for him there. Maybe someday Iwill return, it used to be my favorite to grab a dessert there around 8:30 to eat right before illuminations, because we usually stand in France to exit the International Gateway. Canada also has the fantastic LeCellier and I like just walking around there as well.

I see, you are a real world explorer! Lots of great highlights that you list there! And I see that Via Napoli seems to be a favourite for many.

I volunteered to host August during @pjlla 's month, but I guess that didn't stick.

I am sorry!! I see that @4Mickeys is happy to take on September, so you can have August. I changed the beginning for this thread to reflect this. Please let me know whether this is ok!

I guess I'll be mainly lurking again this month, but I'm excited to see where you take the theme.

This month marks 1 year of WISH participation for me!

Hope your life settles down a bit and you will find the time for popping in now and then. We miss you! And congratulations for sticking with us for one year!! :thumbsup2

I have 2 kids (almost 9 and 10). I would love to say I just need to lose baby weight but I only gained 8 pounds with my second and quickly lost that plus more with in the first year. At that time I weighed less then I did when I got pregnant with my first. When my daughter (almost 9) was 6 months I left my job at a daycare and got the dreaded desk job. I love my job but the desk is making me lazy. Over the 8 years of being at this job I have gained close to 40 pounds. I have been up and down with my weight but only losing about 10 pounds and then gaining it back plus some.

I can totally see how the desk job affected your weight. Going from being active all day to sitting around has a huge influence.

I started back up in April and have lost a little over 8 pounds so far. I didn't meet my goal of 135 by our Disney trip that we leave for on Friday. I was doing really good until the put me on the pill and it has taken my body time to adjust. I got super frustrated with that for awhile and I have not been doing what I need to. I am ready to start back up this month.

8 pounds is great if you are already starting with a low weight. That should be more than 5% of your starting weight, so a great job, even if you missed your pre-Disney goal. Have a fantastic trip! I guess you are already in full packing mode.

As for EPCOT I will most likely have a very unpopular answer. I do not like EPCOT. I never really have. If it was up to me we would skip it every time. However my husband and kids love it so I go. This will be our 4th trip I have gone on with my husband. Somehow we never make it passed the American Pavilion. We always start at Mexico. This trip I told my husband that we are starting on the other side. Up until now I would say Norway was my favorite. Mainly because I have very fond memories of the one time I went when I was kid and riding Maelstorm. I loved that ride. I am very bummed that we are going to miss Frozen by like 2 weeks. On the trip when I was a kid my sister and I rode it over and over while waiting on the Lazer light Show. We meet a family from Whales that we rode with.

That's ok! Maybe this thread will help you appreciate it a bit more! ;) You definitely should start counter clockwise this year! Canada is great pavillion to explore and so is Marocco. Both have lots of nooks and are just very stunning!

My plan for this month is to get back to working out. It is a new start in the aspect that last month I fell off the wagon and need to get back on. I have been able to schedule the kids activities for Monday and Wednesday for the summer. This leaves Tuesday, Thursday and Friday open for me to go to the Rec. I typically do not workout on the weekend because we are usually running around trying to get everything done to start the week.

Delurked noob here sign me up! I may or may no have lurked in here last month... which is only slightly creepy.

:welcome: I am always happy when lurkers come out of lurking!!

But I don't think that lurking is creepy. Everyone has just different comfort levels when it comes to online participation and different amounts of time available to take part. I think it is the nature of message boards that there will always be people who just read. And that is fine.

Accountability is key for me and I need it with my marathon training. With that should come some weight loss though I'm gaining muscle like crazy. So my goal is actually just to hit all my runs and cross training workouts this month. Side personal goal is a 5lb weight loss.

Marathon training sounds hard! I think it makes sense to mainly focus on that. Sounds like you and @DVCFan1994 are in the same boat there!

About me as the noob I'm a huge Disney fan and I loveeeee Epcot so this is an awesome theme to start with!! I try to go about twice a year, and I got my first DL trip this year! I've done three disney race weekends as of right now with another three planned. I run outside of Disney and love it. I've done quite a few races at the 10k and half distances so training for the full has me a little spazzed out. I also LOVE to cook and I think that's about it. I'm actually pretty boring

Does not sound boring at all! Seems like you really have found something that you love with all the running. I was supposed to run a 10k today, but thanks to my stupid injury this did not work out. Can't wait to get back to running!

I am Dona and I have been on and off the last few years.

I just turned 61 on Sunday. I am a retired math teacher. I have been married to my college sweetheart for almost 38 years ( in Aug). We have 2 sons, 31 and 26. The older one is getting married in Aug and the younger one is getting married next April.

Happy belated birthday Dona!! So many weddings happening for you right now! Sounds wonderful.

I was going to be involved in May but life really got crazy. On May 3rd I found out the people that I costume with at the local high school were nominated for a county award. Think of the Tonys but here in Monmouth County they are called the Basies (The theater in Red Bank is named after Count Basie the musician). We had to get people ready to perform again and into costumes. The ceremony is fun but very noisy. We did not win but it was fun since it was my first official nomination. We did win for set and one of females won best supporting actress.

After that craziness was over then my son's bridal shower was the following weekend, my birthday Memorial Day weekend, a friend's 50th birthday party, a friend's daughter's graduation from college off to work at Disney party, my husband working with his sisters to sell his parent's house and dealing with his 2 sisters who we thought were going to kill each other, Mother's Day and what would have been my parent's 62nd wedding anniversary (the same day as Mother's Day). It was not an easy month to to stay on track.

This weekend I am headed to Wichita Kansas for my nephew's wedding on Sunday evening. We leave on Friday morning and get home late on Tuesday night. My younger son and his fiance are coming on Sat so we can spend the weekend with them.

My goal for the month is to work out at least 15 minutes per day

Have a happy and healthy day.

Hope your June is a little quieter than May!

I love Epcot. We got to see it before it even opened. We were there in 1981 and you could take the monorail over to Epcot and see the plans and the outsides of the buildings.

I don't know if I have a favorite country. I love the Martin Short movie in Canada, the ride in Mexico, the movie in China is spectacular, I love Norway and can't wait to see the new Frozen ride, in Germany I enjoy watching the clock, in USA the American Experience is very moving but I also enjoy watching the singing(can't remember the groups name). But I guess my favorite spot is Italy with Via Napoli. We have a couple of great meals there. We took dh there for his birthday dinner last Halloween.

Seems like plenty of people who have a hard time picking a country. All the things you mention are really great!

This question is like asking a parent to choose your favorite child... so it took me a good 30 minutes to answer.

I have to say that FRANCE is my favorite country - and it's actually better than the real France (which as I told my professor when he asked, "is a sh!thole"). We enjoy the France pavilion for a few reasons: the movie provides a great 20 minute nap in a comfy chair during the hottest part of the day; the ice cream shop is home to my favorite snack.. the Croque Glace!; and the wine is out of this world.

The shopping and restaurants leave much to be desired - but the way things are going we didn't buy much at all on our last trip. We love munching around the world and France provides three places to do that and a place to rest. Cannot complain... oh! and the little bridge to walk over near the international gateway is fun too!

I am sorry! :goodvibes But I like your reasoning! To me the France pavillion actually does the best job in transporting me to a different place. And I agree, it does feel like a cleaner version of Paris. I have never a meal at the restaurants there, but the bakery is delicious!

Glad to be here another month! My name is Patty, I'm a 43 year old mother of three. I've been serious about losing weight for almost a year -- tracked my first meal on July 6th of last year! I'm closing in on 100lbs lost and after a week or so of riding on the edge, officially reached Onderland in May (being under 200lbs).

Nearly 100 pounds is amazing! And congratulations on reaching Onderland!

I went back into my fitbit dashboard and see that I have averaged 132 active minutes over the last 28 days. I've decided my goal will be to achieve at least 140 active minutes (per my fitbit) every day this month. Each day will be a yes or a no and I will work out my percentage of "yes" days cumulatively based upon where I am for the month, so I will report on Sunday for days through Saturday: x% out of 4 days, x% out of 11 days, x% of 18 days, x% of 25 days and x% of 30 days for a final check in after vacation.

This sounds like a great goal for a vacation month!

QOTD: I think my favorite country in the World Showcase is Mexico. I love going inside the pyramid on a hot, sunny day - it's so dark and cool and shopping in the market is the best! I've also watched Illuminations from the tables in the quick service restaurant (can't remember the name) and the view is fabulous!

I always wanted to eat at the restaurant inside because I love the atmosphere as well, but it often gets rather so-so reviews and then I don't go there. But I love the inside atmosphere, too!

I'm in for June. Aiming for 6-8 lbs lost. :) 6 will get me to my first mini goal of leaving the 300s. :) I can't wait

MFP: shrinkinMel
instagram: shuttermagik

I completed another 5K at the gym yesterday evening. Aiming to do it again tonight. I finished May with 40 miles. Not quite the 50 miles I was aiming for because I had a out of routine long weekend. I will probably do 5Ks mostly on days I don't do strength though.

:welcome:

Good luck with reaching the 200s! And it sounds like May was a great month for you will all the new activity, even if you did not reach the 50 miles, 40 is still really good, too!

8 pounds is great if you are already starting with a low weight. That should be more than 5% of your starting weight, so a great job, even if you missed your pre-Disney goal. Have a fantastic trip! I guess you are already in full packing mode.

We are leaving tomorrow at 3 am and I have not packed a thing. I have a lot to do tonight. Thankfully I can sleep in the car.

That's ok! Maybe this thread will help you appreciate it a bit more! ;) You definitely should start counter clockwise this year! Canada is great pavillion to explore and so is Marocco. Both have lots of nooks and are just very stunning!

My theory with the world showcase is that if I have to be there I am going to explore it and I am tired of seeing the same thing. Defiantly going counter clockwise this time. I will let you know how it goes when I am back.

Morning....late joiner here

I'm Molli, I've been on the WISH boards for long time now, maybe as long as it's existed almost. I love the friendship and accountability here. Now I need to make it my goal this month to make use of it again! I've had a rough couple months with health problems, and quite frankly it's not getting much better so I just need to pick up and readjust. Back story for those who don't know, 2010-11 , I developed Cushings disease and gained at least 55lb, I stopped weighing at the highest. Treatment unfortunately resorted to removal of my adrenal glands, Addisons disease. I have lost the majority of the weight, but still have about 15-20 lbs to lose and have gained and lost the same 5 lbs for 3 years. I am permanently dependent on steroids, growth hormone replacement, and other hormone replacement which make losing weight difficult

My goal and plan this month is getting back and consistent with my metabolic conditioning workouts and checking in here!

My fav country -- so hard -- England for the shopping, love the Beatles, the tea and candy. But love France too!

Question of the Day – June 2nd

Yesterday we talked about about who we are and what our goals are. Today, tell us what makes this month a new start for you. What are you going to do different this month. Or are you keeping everything as it is? What is your plan for this month?

This month is different for me because I have switched my goal from weightloss to activity. It's only June 2nd and it already feels different - and change of focus can be good sometimes.

We'll see if I feel the same on June 30th!

Yesterday we talked about about who we are and what our goals are. Today, tell us what makes this month a new start for you. What are you going to do different this month. Or are you keeping everything as it is? What is your plan for this month?

My plan for the month is very different than what I've done previously. Usually I'm focused on something I'm doing - what I'm eating, what exercises I'm doing, how far I'm running, etc. This month I'm focusing on how I feel - taking time for myself, seeing what causes me more stress and what helps relieve my stress. I've always been a stress eater, so I think that focusing on reducing my stress and feeling better about myself and my decisions will be a big help for me.

Today's actually a pretty good example of my approach to the month. I haven't been having the best morning. A bird decided to poop on my water bottle, so I had to clean and disinfect that, and then I was eating everything in the kitchen while waiting for my toast this morning. Normally that's something that would stress me out, but I decided to just let it go. Things happen. Sometimes birds poop on you or your stuff. Sometimes you eat too much. It happens, and you just have to move on, and do your best to make the rest of the day better. Just being able to say that and not beat myself up about it is a huge step.

I love the fact that people are looking at how they are feeling and what they can to do to keep moving rather than looking at a scale.

I also want to look at my eating, getting back on track and adding in more movement during the course of the day.

I am getting ready to leave for the airport. We fly out very early tomorrow morning. This afternoon we are dropping the dog off at the kennel and then driving up to a hotel near the airport where we can leave our car for the time we are away. This way we can get an extra hour of sleep tonight. We did that on our last trip and it really helped us make it through the first day without being super tired. This time will be a little different since we have a time change in there but the extra hour will surely help.

I don't know if I will be on the next couple of days but I will definitely see you next Wed.

Have a happy and healthy week.

My favorite country! <3

This month I plan to do completely differently from every other month this year. I've had lots of good intentions with absolutely zero follow through. Ever since the wedding ended and I let my healthy habits go, I just haven't cared. It's past time to care again. 140ish days to lose 20 pounds (ideally)! Gotta get going. Juggling everything is going to be so hard, though. I'm grateful for the part time job, and we're planning to make some big dents in credit cards/car note/student loans over the next year and a half... but juggling that + Etsy + exercise + healthy meals, especially with DH's 2-job schedule, is already a nightmare.

@Hazelon I'm glad you came out of lurkdom. I'm starting "running training" this month with my runDisney V5K's in hopes of doing the Princess 10K with @flvy and @courtneybeth next February, so any advice from a real runner is always welcome, in my opinion!

Ahhh @Flossbolna I'm sorry you're hurt! That's one of the most frustrating things. I had to take a break in training and it was driving me crazy. Just the itch to get out there.

@JacknSally Ohhhh princess should be amazing, maybe crowded but so much fun! You have lots and lots of time to train too. Take it slow and get it done! Consistency is key. Plus once you get that 5k distance consistent you'll be able to double it and wonder why you ever thought 6.2 miles was crazy long. The natural progression for beginner runners is so fast. You're going to go longer and faster and make HUGE gains the first few months and that's so much fun to see!

You're prime for half fantatics with that - you already a member or going to use that as your means to join? That's inspiring - I don't think I could do that (yet!).

It's funny that you mention that because I didn't even know that was a thing until just recently! I'm not a member already but I'm going to see what I can do to join. You could totally do that! You're already running half marathons like crazy.

In KC there's a Festa Italiana this weekend which I've been to for several years now! Great food and very entertaining. I just didn't realize why they had it and I have to assume it has something to do with this!

Definitely going to exercise more. I think I'd like to shift focus away from WW and start looking at macros and calorie counting again. I just feel like with my exercise increasing that I need to focus on nutrition and let the weight loss and toning come as it will. But I'm a little nervous because I have struggled with it in the past.

This June, I'm hoping that I can continue to do what I've done in May. At this point, I'm not doing anything new or different, just staying on course.

I do need to come up with some sort of running/workout plan. I've been kind of going week to week depending on if I had a race or not, but I need to change that.

Random running question - for those that run 10k's and halfs, how much slower is your pace on the half from your 10k pace?

What a thought provoking question for Day 2 -- great idea! I think I'm going to actually keep doing what I have been doing - this has worked for me for the last several months and I'm seeing a lot of success from it. My husband has also decided that he's tired of losing and gaining the same 5 pounds every month and has begun a rigorous calendar of exercising and running. Now it feels like I have my partner back!

In June I'm getting back on the band wagon, as I've been all over the place the past two months.

Lately I've been very tuned in to rituals and how we mark the passages and milestones in our lives. This started to come in to focus when I was at my Brother's in Texas for Easter, which is something we often don't even celebrate. Then more awareness while at WDW and being around families, and also here reading about graduations and marriages and time passing so quickly. Then while just down at the beach we met up with a friend of my Dad's and listening to him recount what his family has been up to and tell Dad stories from when they were young teachers really hit home. So I'm really thinking about everyday rituals, like setting the table instead of eating in front of the TV, and focussing on the act of cooking instead of just getting it done. So long story short, adding ritual to my daily life is a focus for June.

It worked wonders for me starting the activity part in late April. May went great. So far June is too. lol Just on day 2 but I'm keeping my activity up and adding in more nutrition where I can. Down 1.2 since 27th. I'll see what my official percentage will be tomorrow morning if I'm not suddenly retaining water due to TOM. Even today I feel a tad bloated so I was shocked to see it down.
