Healthy Dining?

Hey guys,

Has Disney kept with the times in providing healthy meal alternatives at most of their restaurants? I'm a half and half health freak, meaning, I watch what I eat but I don't obsess. I don't expect EVERY meal on my vacation to be healthy (that wouldn't be very much fun) but I like my midday snacks to be a little more on the healthy side, but still capable of giving me energy for the parks.

Thanks

Well, there are a lot of foods that people seem to think are healthy, like chicken, salmon, or vegetarian dishes, that aren't really so, because of how they're prepared. I know that the Sunshine Seasons Food Fair has a tuna salad that's light. Sushi is always good, and there are a couple places at WDW where you can get that.

In general, though, they seem to cater to the lowest common denominator - most people don't want to eat healthy foods while at WDW, and some of the options are a little silly. For example, you can get a side of fruit at Beaches & Cream, to eat with your double cheeseburger. :scared1: The vegetarian option at Artist Point is a potato chive potsticker, which is extremely oily and thus not a really "healthy" dish, for instance.

WDW is getting rid of Tusker House, which had a salmon (a bit oily, but still better, health-wise, than most of the WDW food offerings) and a veggie wrap, to replace it with a nice, fatty buffet.

They are phasing out all trans-fats, but, again, a food can have 0 trans fats and still not be technically "healthy" food.

Cheers!

We have always been able to find some healthy choices at most places around the World. At the very least most TS places offer some sort of salad as an entree. My dd5 LOVES fruit and we have found at least 1 place in every park sells fresh fruits and some have raw veggies like carrots for a snack choice. There is a great stand outside the safari @ Animal Kingdom and I know there is a place right outside the Haunted Mansion as well as Toon Town. :thumbsup2 I believe the CS in France offers a great fruit and cheese plate as well.
If you have specific places in mind for dining you can always check the menus at allearsnet.com for specifics.

I'm not sure how you're defining "healthy" (low fat? low carb? more fruits and veggies?) but here are my thoughts:

I agree. Sunshine Food Court has excellent choices. Other options (I'm not a health nut, but I'm simply don't care for burgers, chicken fingers, fries, etc.) Japan's counter service Yakatori House has nice options as does Morocco's CS (Tangerine Cafe?), Garden Grill has nice options. I also enjoy Clombia Harbor Hourse at MK and Pinocchio's isn't bad either, but I think they may have changed the menu since I was there last.

MGM has a grilled flatbread CS and I enjoy the bagels and lox at Starring Rolls. I liked Tusker House, so of course it is closing. Flame Tree BBQ isn't bad. The biggest challenge I have it at the food courts of the resorts. LOVE the Boma buffet with many, many options. Kona cafe for lunch or supper has nice noodle dishes.

Does this help any????
