Healing thru Food - with pics Sept 26-Oct. 3 Updated 10/31 California Grill

I'm right there with you about Guacamole...can't get past the color OR texture...too similar to baby poo.
I'm sorry that Wm had a bad day or two on your trip. But it sounds like the food wouldn't have been any better if he was well.
Keep up the good work with this report. Hope you are feeling a little better over the weekend.

Now you know why I kinda wanted a do over. Not complete bad, but bad moments. I can't believe you only have 11 more weeks. Woo hoo!

So sorry for your loss.

Thanks for posting your report. I've got a question about Liberty Tree Tavern. I've never heard about the bench seating before. Exactly how close are you seated to other people? Are you actually at the same table with other people?

There is a long bench along a wall and tables at this bench. You are not seated with others, but they are close. I am a big girl so when I scooted out I was right next to them. It is table, space, table, space, table. There are rgular tables too, but we weren't lucky enough to get one.

Every one was feeling a bit better, but very cautious today. Hence the reason I ended up taking my little house apes on expedition everest by myself. If anyone knows me they know I don't like heights and I scream. Me and Stinky got on and Josh shared a seat with a man who didn't speak a lot of English but was very kind to Josh. They tried to talk a bit which was comforting to me since I tend to think the worst of people, no offense intended, I work in a prison and see lots of the "worst of people". The boys loved it, I screamed and Stinky kept yelling at me cause I wanted to hold his hand. Good ride, I will go again. Wm couldn't due to obvious reasons and there was no way Mom was getting on after the Space Mountain fiasco.

11:00 ressies for Yak and Yeti. Let me give you a bit of advise, Do Not go on Kali River Rapids right before going to lunch in a nice sit down, air conditioned restaurant. OY. I was soaked to my undies and freezing. Mom gets cold anyway so I chose to sit under the vent. What I do for my Mom.

This was my moms absolute favorite restaurant. She mentioned it again Friday at our local Chinese place.

We sat upstairs and the decor was very nice. The waiter was very good. his was the only place someone offered to take our picture.

Mom ordered the "Prawn Flavored Crisps - peanut sauce " hese were not what we were expecting, but they did provide entertainment for Stinky and Wm. These puffy crisps will stick to your toung and then start melting but it feels like bubbles. Very odd. But fun. Very little flavor so even Josh tried them. No one liked the sauce, very teriyaki, no peanut flavor, almost like they brought the wrong one.

I ordered the "Pork Egg Rolls - chili plum dipping sauce" Very yummy, thumbs up from everyone.

100_3580.jpg

Wm got the "Pork Pot Stickers - pan seared or steamed, soy lime dipping sauce". OUrs were pan seared and very ymmy. Wm really liked these. H didn't like his entree but really enjoyed these. Good soy sauce too. We eat Chinese at least once per week, so this was a pretty enjoyable meal for us.

100_3581.jpg

Mom and I were happy withour entrees. Wm was not. He just didn't lke the flavor. Must be a like it or hate it kind of thing.

Mom ordered the "Stir-Fried Beef and Broccoli - flank steak, broccoli, brown sauce" She said the meat was so tender, not like the tough meat you get a buffett. She share hers with Wm and he liked it also.

100_3584.jpg

I had the "Crispy Honey Chicken - tempura chicken, broccoli, carrots, honey sauce " I really like this. It was lite and wasn't greasy. The veggies were very good. Josh ate my rice, but I am pretty sure that was good too. He LOVES white rice.

100_3586.jpg

Wm got the "Maple Tamarind Chicken - Seared chicken breast, Indonesian tamarind glaze, coconut ginger rice, baby bok choy, shiitake mushroom stir fry. " If you don't know what Tamarind is, don't order this. Wm saw maple and though "sweet" He did not like this at all and barely ate it. He will eat just about anything if he is hungry, so this had to be bad. It could have been a very good dish, but you have to like the seasoning.

100_3585.jpg

The boys got mini burger and chicken bites. No pics and I am not sure why. The kids love it when I take pics of their food. Josh loved the rice and Stinky always loves his burgers. Pretty standard kids meals.

For dessert the boys both had ice cream sundaes again. Mom and I ordered the "Fried Wontons - Skewers of fresh pineapple and cream cheese wontons, vanilla ice cream, honey vanilla drizzle " We shared these with Wm also. You have to get these if you eat here. OMGoodness. We both loved them. Even Wm liked them. They are not too sweet but just right, esp with the warm pineapple. The drizzle is the best.

That is all for today...Yak and Yeti, give it a try. I think they have worked the kinks out. Up next, Wm's favorite meal...California Grill and the best mashed potatoes in the World!:cheer2:

Sigh...my food report is almost over and then I will have to get started on my scrapbook. Maybe I will get it done before we go back and I have to start again.

California Grill 10/01/08 - I may have some difficulties as the menu on AllEars isn't exactly the same, but I will do my best. This is the one restarant I was very excited about. When I make my ADRs 180 days in advance it was for 4 people at 7:00 and Wishes was for 9:00, perfect. When Mom decided to come with, I had to adjust things a bit. I changed the ressies to 5:30 as mom doesn't like to eat real late and I could get another reservation for 5 until 9:20 at night. So I deceided we could just come back and watch the fire works. Ah, the best laid plans. Well things didn't exactly go as planned. We arrived almost on time, we were a little early but not too much. We were escorted upstairs and checked in with the hostess. We sat down with our new best friend from this trip, the ever present vibrating pager. (even my Dr office uses these now). We sit at the couches and look over the menus. We eventually wander outside to the balconies. My fear of heights kicks in a little but it wasn't too bad. My Hubby and I did notice that tourists can be a bunch of pigs. We noticed this at our own hotel with cups and wrapper left all over, but on the balcony of the CG I was most dissapointed. Someone left their drink glasses (broken) just sitting in a corner. I am sorry, but someone else may not have seen them and cut them selves. I don't know about the rest of you but in my world you clean up ater yourself, or find someone to help you. Ok off my soap box. The view from the balcony was fabulous. I was so neat to see the MK from way up there, the only thing that distracted me was the construction. But the very large birds flying around the construction were neat. I swear they were eagles or very large hawks. My Dad would have loved the view. We do spend a lot of time talking about what Dad iked last time we came and what he would or wouldn't have liked this time. Sometimes this makes me and mom very sad and other times we laugh at what his reactions were. On my next post I will post a pick of our last trip with my Dad and you can see his sense of humor.
Here is a pic of the view:

Here is a pic of the kitchen from our table:

Our waitress was from Wausau, WI so we chit chatted about home for a bit. Wm decided he wanted to try a glass of wine. We are not drinkers at all, but he does this when we go on vacation and then I take a picture of the terrible faces he makes. Its tradition. I don't even remember what kind of wine it was.

100_3710.jpg

Stinky had to have his kiddie cocktail in a wine glass also. I bet we look like good parentsd huh?

100_3706.jpg

100_3707.jpg

The waitress brought the kids fish crackers which Josh devoured. She also brought bread and olive oil. I am the only one who likes the oil. Mom says it tastes too much like oil. go figure. She at her bread with good ole fashioned butter.

100_3716.jpg

Stinky ordered the kids salad which was his favorite. He liked the big pieces of lettuce and loved the croutons. So much that the waitress brough him a plate of croutons and even gave up some to go.

100_3721.jpg

We mad Josh order the fresh fruit even though we knew he wasn't going to eat it. We all picked at the fruit which was very good. Very fresh.

100_3714.jpg

I ordered the flat bread with spinach, tomatoes and onions. I cannot remember exactly what was on it, but I would have been very happy to make a meal out of jus the flat bread.

100_3712.jpg

Mom and Wm had ordered the same flat bread as each other. Not sure what it was called but it had fontina, fungus, I mean mushrooms, and bacon and little baby potato chips on it. WM loved it, but didn't like the aoili (sp) that was on top. Mom and I couldn't finish ours so we took them back to the hotel. Sorry about the gigantic pic. Photobucket is not "working with me" today.

100_3713-1.jpg

I think my mom had this "Pan-Roasted Grouper Fillet - With olive oil crushed potatoes, cipollini onions, and red wine butter sauce " but I could be wrong. She loved the fish, but hated the potatos. Houw do you ruin potatos you may ask...add olive oil to them I guess.

100_3720.jpg

Wm and I both ordered the filiet. OOH ymmy goodness on a plate. two thumbs up. Oh my gosh where do they get those potatos. Oh yeah, here is the description, "Oak-fired Filet of Beef with Boniato Mashed Potatoes, Sauteed Haricot Vert and Teriyaki Barbeque Sauce " Wms favorite meal by far.

100_3719.jpg

I neglected to take a pic of the boys food as I was attempting to head off a major melt down when Stinky saw his entree. "Grilled Chicken Breast
with Yukon gold potatoes and seasonal vegetables " I thought mashed potatoes would come, instead they got roasted red potatos and the chicken breast had something on it. Josh ate his chicken and Stinky ate croutons.

For dessert I ordered the ""The Original" - The California Grill's legendary butterscotch creme brulee with a duo of banana cakes, and caramelized bananas " the creme brulee was good, but I make better banana bread at home. I probably won't do that again.

100_3725.jpg

100_3726.jpg

Wm and mom tried the "Valrhona Chocolate Cake and Apricots Warm Chocolate Cake with Molten Center, House-made Apricot Ice Cream and Apricot Sauce", but they go theirs with vanilla icecream and chocolate sauce. I am sorry to say, but it was better than the chocolate wave at CR. My mom makes a chocolate bread budding that tastes very similar.

100_3727.jpg

Josh ordered an ice cream sundae. He thought the nilla wafers were a nice touch.

100_3722.jpg

Stinky got the Kids sushi. Which is glorified rice krispi treats and fruit roll ups. This was served with chop sticks and our very smart waitress brought two sets so the boys wouldn't fight. So Josh at his ice cream with chop sticks. Stinky Loved the sushi.

100_3723.jpg

Here is a shot of the sunset...

100_3729.jpg

Overall, CG is a must do. Wm has requested it again for our next trip. Mom thought it was nice, but not a must do for her, but she is much more conservative. We never did make it back to watch the fire works, but thats ok. Mom was not feeling good and I think she was sad again, so she took Josh back to the hotel since he was falling asleep on the couches. We took Stinky to watch Spectro magic parade and called it a night.

Next up our final full day...Kona for Breakfast and a disappointing Brown Derby.

Can't wait to see the pic of your Dad. Our upcoming trip is called our "all new" trip, new resort and all new restaurants. I must admit CA Grill has become a tradition for us and I'm really going to miss it.

LOVE Stinky's expressions at dinner!!
Hope your cold is better, as mine is now kicking my butt! See you at work tomorrow.
