Just to give everyone a heads up, I just got an email from Michaels warning that they have been the victim of PIN pad tampering in one of the Chicago stores but are making everyone aware incase it is a wider spread issue.

If you have used a credit or debit card at Michaels watch your account and contact your bank.

I got the email too. But I wonder how they are contacting all the customers who don't have an online account.

Hmm. I wonder what store got hit? I've not shopped in the city proper, but have shopped in "Chicagoland" stores. Now I am worried.

My sister-in-law just told me today that she got hit by this. She shopped at the store in Bloomingdale in March. She started getting fraud alerts on her phone on Monday, called the bank -- they wiped out their entire account. Fortunately the bank will be replacing the money but it's a long process, will take a few weeks. Meanwhile the poor thing called me and asked if we could front them the $$$ to buy my mom's Mother's Day present (and of course I said yes). What a mess. Seeing more and more of this. People are just getting really desperate in this economy, I guess. In the past 3 weeks we have 2 friends whose homes have been burglarized, and now this.

This happened at Aldis also. Wife lost $500 and Aldis never as much as sent an email, she heard about it from the bank. Aldis posted a small notice near the exit about how you should check your account for unusual activity and sent a link to a website.

This is the front page story of the chicago tribune today. It says the victims were people who shopped at Michaels in Chicago, Bloomingdale, Vernon Hills, Mount Prospect, Niles, Burbank, Naperville, Glenview and Hoffman Estates. It also talks about Aldi in the article.

I've been to three of those stores several times within the past couple of months. I'm going to be closely monitoring my checking account

I've shopped at the Vernon Hills store!

I called my bank today and they were aware of the problem. She told me that they got a list of members whose cards were compromised and if I didn't already get a call from them, then my card wasn't compromised. She said to keep monitoring my account, however.
