HEA cancellation due to wind?

I have a reservation for HEA Garden Plaza. All this time I was keeping an eye on the weather for storms. Then I realized that wind speed can also disrupt fireworks. My res is for this Monday, 3/26 - weather.com is showing wind speeds of 16 mph! I know there are more factors than wind speed but what are the chances of cancellation?

It’s extremely rare for them to cancel. Once the cannons are loaded, they have to be fired.

HEA is rarely ever flat out cancelled. A delay is far more likely if conditions warrant. It’s possible of course, but chances are pretty low.

I’m not sure if there is a max wind speed where they draw the line, but we were in the MK 1/1 and it was VERY windy. Strong, consistent head wind if facing the castle. The most constant wind I have ever felt around fireworks time (I distinctly remember it because it was also freezing cold!).

Show went off as scheduled. We were in the garden in front of Casey’s and had ashes and debris rain down on us a few times during the show (was cool actually, DS loved it). Tink didn’t fly (pretty normal with any moderate wind).

Hope that helps.

We are here this week and had a couple days with high wind advisories. We ran into the actual campfire part of the Chip and Dale Campfire at Fort Wilderness cancelled (also high fire weather warning), but no HEA cancellations.

And wind speeds of 16 mph really isn't much.... to us it's a cool breeze! ;)

I think you also may have heard about DisneyLAND cancelling fireworks. They have stricter wind speed limits since they are surrounded by city/homes. Disneyworld does have requirements but they have more leeway.
Yep. When we went to DL we actually missed fireworks 2 of our 5 nights due to them having to cancel due to winds.

While WDW will rarely cancel HEA in its entirety for any reason, Tink however, will be grounded for many reasons. I was actually pretty surprised to see her fly during our most recent trip. It was pretty windy the night we watched HEA.

I had googled wind speed and WDW fireworks and one place had mentioned potential cancellation at wind speeds over 10-12 mph - but that directionality also mattered. This post was from last summer on wdwmagic forum. They were discussing WDW not DL.

Whatever they were talking about, that was incorrect information.

Hmmm... that's interesting! ::yes:: And I'm sure the direction has a lot to do with it. Remember recently the small fire at 7DMT! I'm sure there are many safety regulations in place.

If they cancelled fireworks for say 10-15mph wind then you'd likely see fireworks cancelled more often than their shot off.

That's why they now have sprinklers all around the back side of the castle and it looks like it's been pouring at the end of fireworks

Last year there was a huge thunder/lightning storm when we were at California Grill for dinner and the fireworks. Our server told us that they will postpone the show but not cancel it. We tried to wait it out, but couldn't and left, much to the disappointment of our server. He kept telling us to wait, but an hour after our desserts were done we couldn't hold out any longer. When we got on the bus back to our resort we heard the fireworks start. The show was probably 2 hours late, but it went off. Cheers!!!!!!!!!

One of the best viewings we ever had of Wishes was when it was significantly delayed (think hours) - the park had emptied out and we happened to be crossing the hub when the music started. We all looked at each other with a “huh?” then had a perfect view with minimal crowds. I think it had been storming that day... can’t remember.

Yes, Disneyland in California cancels the fireworks show all the time. We were there in early December for 6 nights and only got to see the fireworks twice. The other days were cancelled. I have never known MK fireworks to be cancelled. Once we were in Epcot and Illuminations were cancelled due to wind, a very rare occurrence.
