HDDR refund fiasco

Just an update, but I finally got the e-gift card about 3, before I got home from work and called them. Glad I didn't have to call again. It's a pain trying to get to someone, then annoying trying to explain the situation to a few different people. I've never had an issue using a gift card before. From now on, if I do, I'll make sure to save it but not add any more money in case this happens. I did know about the 1000 limit, but I never thought about it during either of my calls.

Unfortunately the easy solutions wouldn't work. I have a couple other gift cards, but they all have 1000 on them, and I couldn't use it for anything else at this moment. Don't have a reservation for our stay yet (going to wait until October waiting to see discounts), and couldn't book HDDR again since we are still almost two weeks from our ADR dates.

Thanks everyone for your ideas!!
I always try and keep an empty gift card on my account or at least on hand so that I can move funds if one of my cards is full for some reason.

Do you mean Disney gift card limits or just in gift cards in general?
I was speaking of a non Disney single card limit.
Disney gift card, other companies have different limits. I have seen some with as low as a $25 limit and some with $100,000, it really depends on how much liability the company is will to accept. Yes, outstanding and unused gift cards are considered a liability as they are essentially cash that you can to the company, usually essentially interest free until you use it, which means it is debt on the books and a debt that be cashed in at any time. When a company closes or is sold off these gave to be resolved like any other debt as well, every company finds different ways to do this, some take he debt of the company when they buy it, which means nothing changes as far as you are concerned, some just buy them out, etc.

I honestly had no idea until reading this thread that it's a bad idea to let them throw away the card. I've been gifted a lot of gift cards in life and have always (really, I think every time) said "yes" when the balance goes down to $0.00 and they ask if I want them to throw it away. I'm glad I came across this thread. I won't say yes anymore.

It depends on what you use them for, if you use them for something like food that you aren't likely to need to get a refund for the it would probably be ok. If it is for merchandise, then no. And definitely do not throw them away if you put them on your room as anything left over will get refunded to them.
