I love this idea so much. What better way to get the shelter dogs out of their kennels than to let visitors, who cannot bring their dogs, take them out for the day?

One problem I see that I don't see addressed; most rental cars won't let you have a dog in the car. How do visitors take the dog if they can't put it in the rental car? Guessing condos aren't too keen on having dogs in them either. Still, love the idea and I hope it's a huge success!

Most people using that program will take the dog for a walk on a trail, not back to their condo. Many condos forbid dogs or cats.

Maui's been doing that for years now - I believe the shelters let volunteers know where some good walking trails are that are close to the shelter, so you don't have to transport the dogs.

We tried doing it one year when we were there, but it's such a popular program that it's booked up weeks in advance.

As do most rental cars - but how else do you take the dog from the shelter?

Re-reading, the program has been around a while. Guessing it's just locals who are borrowing the dogs - but really hoping visitors can take advantage too.

My sister took a very sweet dog to the beach last year from the Maui Humane Society. I don't think she even thought about whether or not the car rental company allowed that. LOL. They are definitely encouraging people to take a dog for a day, or even foster if you live on the island.

We spent a morning this past summer at the Maui Humane Society socializing with the kittens. So many cute and cuddly kittens and older cats. It was very tough leaving them, without taking home a few. But my 2 12-year old cats back home would hate us. Happy to see that the one I fell in love with was recently adopted. The humane society even offers to fly cats to the mainland for adoption!

I think I’ve heard Alaska Airlines does this. You can volunteer to chaperone an adopted dog on a flight to the mainland. So fun!
