I bought the DVD of "The Outsiders: The Complete Novel" It has twenty minutes of added footage. The first 12 minutes of the movie is all the new footage and I really liked it a lot. This was done to make the movie follow the book more closely. Most of the scenes were great though the acting in some spots was a bit rough (which was the case in the original movie as well) but not necissarily the actors fault. Speaking the dialogue lifted directly from the novle could not have been easy. The music score has been changed as well and while I thought it worked some of the time I was not impressed with it an a few spots.

I read a couple months ago how they had to cut so much from the original... they didn't want to do it... but time constraints or something...

We can't watch it yet, but I am excited to see it! DS is playing Johnny in a couple of weeks for their Drama Club fall production. He has firm orders not to watch it until after the play. They don't want the movie to influence his role! I can't wait till its over only because he was also told not to get a hair cut until after the play and its driving me nuts!! I had no idea how quickly his hair grew until we didn't get it cut for a few weeks!

I haven't seen the new one. I love the old one... ahhh such rebel boys! :D

Spoilers:
I thought the new music was appropriate in some spots. the new music is all Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and a lot of country / surf guitar. Generally if you read about it or listewn to Mr Copoola talk about it they make it sound like they rplaced only part of the original score but they essentially left in the opening Stay Gold song over the new titles and then brought it back at the end. All the footage between the two is the new music. 95% of the original score is gone. Carmine Copolla's score was a bit overbearing and syrupy in spots and those portions benefited from the new music but there are some important emotional scenes that I thought worked much better with the original score and not the rock n roll mostly the last 15 minutes with the rumble and Matt Dillons final scene.

I think it is worth buying, particularly if your are fan of the book or if you have not seen it before. If you are a hige fan of the movie you may not like it as much. Some reviews I have read stated that they really hated the new music but most people liked the added scenes.
