I am debating on whether or not I should pull my son out of kindergarten next September to take to Disney for free dining. Has anyone done it before?? If we don't go in September, we will go in December. I just hate to pass up free dining (if it is offered). Thoughts....

I did many years ago never regretted it either. My DD was at the top of the class tho had she been below average student I prolly would not have taken her out.

Taking DD out of school till High school worked really well now that she in high school an in all honors classes and sports NO WAY she can miss a week of school.

When dd7 was in kindergarten she went on the disney cruise the last week of sept/first week of oct and again in dec we took her out for our trip to disneyworld.

ETA~ I think its worth it for the savings to go if free ddp will be available. I would do the math and figure what your savings would be and then decide when to got rather than worrying about taking ds out of school right now its just kindergarten heck here where we live K is not even required.

I have no problem pulling him out of school. I am just thinking since it will be kindergarten, I should wait till later in the year. But I really think he will be ok, if he misses in the beginning of the year.

Yep, I pulled my eldest DD in 2004 for WDW in May, she was in 1st Grade and then my youngest DD in 2006 (was in Kinder) right before the week of Thanksgiving for WDW & Sea World - they caught up and it didn't effect them at all.

DS is 10 now, and in 5th grade.

He's been pulled the following:

K--1 week in Disney
1st--1 week in Disney
2nd--3 days in Ft Myers
3rd--2 days in Ft Myers
4th--3 days Disney/Ft Myers
5th--2 days Disney/Ft Myers

As they get older, it's harder to get caught up, but we've had no problems from teachers, administrators, or catching up.

Since my son was in preschool, we had taken him out of school for two weeks in october. He is now in grade three and we have separated it down to 7 school days in Oct and 3 school days in march (since he has a week for spring break).

I think if you speak to the teacher and see what they think, it would help you in your decision. It also depends on how quickly they can catch up. In Kindergarten, my son took maybe a day or two to catch up. There wasn't much new they did and we always work with him at home. On our last trip, at grade 3, he missed 7 days of school and he took a few days to catch up also.

I believe it really depends on your child and how they will be able to cope coming back.

He is currently in preschool right now, so I won't be able to talk to his teacher. I will have to book the trip before I even register him for kindergarten. It will save us about $500 to pull him out in September, as opposed to December. I would like to go the week of Labor Day. So he will only miss 4 days of school. But he will only start school the week before. That is my concern.

Personally I don't think twice about pulling my kids out of school for a trip.

DS 13
2003 - Grade 4 - 1 week
2006 - Grade 7 - 1 week
2007 - Grade 8 - 1 week

DS 8 - same years/duration
Kindergarden
Grade 2
Grade 3

We are planning on a trip for the week after New Year 2009 so they will miss a week then too. Possible 2 weeks next depending on free dinning for 2008.

I pulled my son out kindergarten in October. The teacher had no problem with it at all. That was the only time we pulled him out of school. It is so nice in September/October, I would go for it!

I was having the same issue. My dd starts kinder in Sept. I also worried about pulling her out. I would not have so much of an issue if it were later in the year, but in Sept. she will just be adjusting to going to school full time, getting to know her friends, teachers, etc. She is my first so I we have not been through the transition before and I don't want to disrupt it so early on. So, we decided not to do it and to go this month instead. So, we leave in 2.5 weeks!! We might consider another trip next Jan if all goes well.

If he started kindergarten 8/26 (just a guess b/c the calendar is not out yet) would you still you pull your son out on 9/2 for a week?? He would be in school for about a week. Then I would pull him out for a week. Then he would go back and I would not pull him out the rest of the year, for a vacation...

I pulled my daughter out in Kindergarten and I'll be doing it again this December. She'll be in 3rd grade at that time. Better to do it now, she may not want to be off for a week when she's in High School.

I would highly recommend contacting the principal, since you can't speak to the teacher. Depending on the school district, they can be VERY strict about vacations during the school year. I've heard horror stories! Personally, I'm taking DD out in May this year (she's in 1st grade) for a week. I just can't imagine fighting the crowds and the heat in the summer! Good luck!

This is jmo but I wouldn't do it. Not the 2nd week of school. I'd pony up the additional $500 and go another time later in the year.

Our twins had just started kindergarten and had only went to school for one day when we went last September for free dining. We are doing it again this year (bounceback). When we went for open house at the school we let the teachers know and then filled out a form that said what days they would be absent. We received the form back and the teachers had written what homework had to be done on it (for my older ones). I'm glad we did it and will keep doing it as long as free dining is offered. It saves soooo much money for six people.

I would be hesitant to take a Kindergarten child out in September. The kids are just starting to get adjusted to a new schedule and all new procedures so your child may be confused when he returns.

My DD took my DGD out in January and she was fine but I think she would have had problems that first month.

I think it really depends on your child. My DS needed that first month of school to get into the routine of things. Many other kids are more adaptable than he is, and they probably would have managed just fine.

To be perfectly honest, if I were in your shoes, I might wait to put him in school until after you get back from vacation. IMHO, that would be less disruptive than school for a week, vacation for a week, then back to school.

Yes, we did in September 2006. It was the third week of classes. I told his teacher on back to school night. Worked out fine for us. As a PP said, it does depend on your child. My son adjusts easily to most things, without much fuss, so I sort-of knew the disruption would not have a negative impact on things.

It all worked out fine for us.
