Has anyone ever heard of having an ebay auction that sells hope in a box or something that is really just for people to send donations?

Why?

SIL says her friend has seen this where the “buyer” just sends donations to help with something like raising money for a specific cause (walking for a cause donations, raising money for a sick and dying person, etc).

I am going to look on ebay, but I have no clue what to look for.

Just wondering if someone has ever seen this or done this.

I've seen charity auctions but never just a solicitation to send money. EBay has strict rules about raising funds for charity, and I suspect that would violate them. I may be wrong, but that just doesn't seem right.

Are you talking about a mystery box?? Where you do not know what you are bidding on - but supposedly the seller has put a ton of prizes in the box??

I have run across a few auctions on ebay in the past where people were selling something that had no real value in order to raise money. One I remember was pictures of the person's child that they said they were selling to raise money to treat an illness. There is no way to verify that the person is actually being truthful or, if they are telling the truth, whether or not they would be spending the money on what they say they are. Because of that, I don't think anyone would get many bids. The ones I saw closed with just a few dollars bid.
I have no idea whether or not something like that is allowed by ebay rules, but I agree with travelitis that it just doesn't seem right.

I think only recognized charities are allowed to list this on E-Bay.

I have bid on/bought several items from E-Bay for charities, but all were registered or 401(c)3 or something along those lines.

Most of the time I've just donated the item back to be reacutioned.
