Have you ever run out of gas?

As a teen, sure - lots of times. I remember many nights, pulling into a gas station on fumes and pulling change out from under car seats to get enough gas to get me home...

Only once- it was so embarrassing and such an ordeal. I was in my very early 20's, just out of college and in my first "grownup" job and apartment. Ran out of gas as I left the lot on my way to work that morning. I had noone to help me, as I knew nobody in the apt complex. A neighbor took pity on me and got me to the gas station, but couldn't wait long enough to drive me back. I had to call a cab to get me and my gas can back to my car. What a lesson to learn!! Now I fill up when I reach 1/4 tank.

DH will drive after the gas light is on. He was driving my suburban, pulling a trailer, when the light came on. He continued home and assured me I had plenty to get to the gas station the next day. Nope. I had my oldest and 2 youngest and I was stuck on a 2 lane highway. DH was 30 miles away at work. Thankfully, he called a friend who lived near where I was to come help me. DD10 has been paranoid about the gas level ever since.

You must be over 30!

I remember as a teen a bunch of friends and I taking a road trip to Maryland from PA (not across the border, but through WV) and none of us thought about gas until we were already in MD. We made it home on the change we found on the floor and under the seats. That sure wouldn't happen these days! I'm not sure I could make it across town on the change in my car.

Yeah, I will be 43 in 2 weeks. Even then I would get strange looks when buying 37 cents worth of gas... :lmao:

Back in my teen days, I did run out once....just a couple doors down from a gas station. The guy behind me, pushed my car with his car into the station. I was lucky. I've never let my tank get that low again!

PUBLIC service announcement for those thirll seekers,,

it is not good for the car to let your tank get below 1/4

2 things happen
1.. it increases the risk of dirt clogging your fuel filter or causing engine damage.
2. letting the gas level get too low, can cause the fuel pump to run hotter, and cause premature failure.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Noooo. I will push it though-- until the light goes on. One day I know I'm going to come too close to tempting fate!

Once. Silly me, the gas gauge only went up to 3/4 tank... so I thought when it was empty it would go down a quarter below empty when it was actually empty. Nooooooooooo....

ONLY time.

I have not. All the cars I have owned have a little gauge that alerts me when the tank is getting low.

I have twice when I was in my early twenties. My sisters and I were in a McDonald's drive through waiting in line. The slight incline caused what gas I had to go to the wrong side of the tank and my car died. The people behind us had to back us so we could roll backwards. Once on level ground the car restarted and we just left.

The second time we were driving down a hill to the gas station. The car stalled and we coasted in.:goodvibes

Once, when I was staying with relatives for a summer job, I could not find a gas station on my way home from work. I thought there was one right at the entrance to their neighborhood, but it was only a convenience store with no gas. Luckily, my relatives had a gas can and I ran out only a block from their house.

If I tell you, my husband will find out. And he would NEVER let me live it down.:lmao:

I haven't yet. But my guage is currently broken and will cost $500 to repair. Since I don't have the $ to repair it and share the car with my son, I am driving in fear!

Years ago right after getting a new van, I did. I didn't notice it was even running low because the little gauges weren't where I was used to looking. So I ran out and didn't even know why my car stopped (you'd never guess I was a brunette when it comes to anything mechanical like a car). A police officer gave me a ride home, which was super nice of her considering cops aren't taxi drivers. This was pre-cell phone era, so I went home and my now ex husband went and fixed the problem. To his credit, he didn't even give me too hard a time about it.

Twice actually - once I knew I pushed it but the last time it happened to me, my car said I had 8 miles left.

I now try not to have the light come on, when i'm at 60 miles left, i'll fill up. I hear it's really bad for your car.

"Have you ever run out of gas?"

Yes, seems like everyday - when I get home from work. Just to pooped to do anything.
