Have you ever had your table stolen at a restaurant?

We put our name on the list. Then they called our name. We went up and were told that they already seated the party. Ok... Is there another party on the list with my name? No. Those people stole my table.

What kind of people think this is ok?

Well, obviously, it's odd and not polite.
How did they skip ahead to the hostess station when your name was called?

What a coincidence! This story on "Not Always Right" was posted just today: https://notalwaysright.com/no-reservations-stealing-reservations/58425

I personally would be very irritated, but as long as I got seated promptly and didn't have to wait, I wouldn't make a fuss about it. But, if these people - in any way! - interfered with my reservation, such as by making us wait, then I would raise a stink with the manager and ask to have them moved and/or ejected so we could have our table.

I'd never before heard of people stealing tables at a restaurant, and here are two stories of just that!!

Sure I'd be a little bothered by it, but so long as we didn't have to wait too long for another table I wouldn't get my knickers in a twist too much.

I stole a table once...on accident. Their name sounded very similar to ours and it was really noisy when the hostess was calling names. We thought she said our name, went and got seated, ordered drinks, then the hostess came by confused and asked us our name. We figured out what happened and they let us keep the table. They sat the other party right away. The whole meal the other table kept glaring at us but oddly we got our meal comped for all the confusion. ???

We've had that happen several times both on vacation & at home. If you eat out enough, it's bound to happen. People appear to be listening for the table size only, then adopt the name. The hostess is usually very apologetic & seats us next.

My story isn't exactly like the OPs but my husband and I were just in Hawaii a lil over a week and a half ago. We went to this brunch place in Honolulu. We put our names down and at that time there wasn't any table open. Well the bar just opened up as a few people left (the bar wasn't like a place to get alcohol just a place to eat without it being an actual table). This group of 4 that was in front of us was given the option of taking the bar..they hesitated because they really wanted a table but didn't want to have to wait much longer. They eventually declined the bar and thus it was given to us as an option. Now they were right there in front of us when we were given the option of going to the bar. Well SUDDENLY the bar became the place they wanted AFTER we had said "sure we'll take it" so they swept those spots right from under us. I didn't think it was right for the host to just up and take the spots away from us much less the group but it did put the host in an odd spot.

So funny thing is just after they were seated at the bar a table for 4 became open so it was fine for us to sit there. Well before we even got through the door (as all the waiting was done outside the restaurant) SUDDENLY they wanted that table and so they moved from the bar to the table. We ended up at the bar like we were originally given the option for. It was tactless in my opinion for the group to do it. Either you accept the bar or your don't but don't make groups be moved around for your preferred spot. I did complain to the other host (I believe they were brothers) who ended up seating us about what happened and he genuinely understood how we felt and apologized. I said it wasn't as big of a deal because we didn't have to wait more than a minute more for seating but that they should keep that in mind for future issues.

I agree - it may have been unintentional -

I always find a spot near the hostess when I'm waiting so I can hear our name being called.

I'm honestly not surprised tables are taken by others though. So many people do not pay attention, or continually talk loud when the hostess calls names, so others can't hear.

With a name like Smith.. lol yea it's happened!
I rolled up on the table and addressed the woman. Told her it was amazing that Two Rebecca Smith were in the same restaurant. Same time. Party of two. I kept on with the WOW crap. Even threw in man the odds.. being as this city has over 450,000 people. She looked down and said sorry!

one time I was at Target, had about 7-8 things in my cart, I left it went back a row to get something I forgot , went back couldn't find my cart, looked all over. Then I seen this crazy eyed lady walking around with my cart, I said "excuse me I think you got the wrong cart" she said "no i didn't" , I tried to spy on her to see when she would abandon my cart or actually buy the stuff I picked but after about 10 min I was looking wierd

I gues this is where having an unusual last name helps...for once.
