Adult DD just made herself a cup of hot cocoa - Swiss Miss - to which she added some of her Lactaid milk.. She comes in my room and says, "Mom, taste this.. It tastes funny to me.."

So I taste it - and immediately recognized the taste (and smell) as mold.. So we go out in the kitchen, we're looking over the box of Swiss Miss - exp. date isn't until next year - and it appears to be fine..:confused3

Open the fridge - pull out her half gallon of Lactaid milk (exp. date Dec.16th) - only missing a smidge that she had in her cereal yesterday.. Take a whiff - mold!! Look closer and see that there is mold inside the carton (sides) and inside the cap!! Everything else in the fridge is fine - haven't lost the power or anything since the milk was purchased..

I've seen "chunks" in milk; I've seen very "thick" milk (when it's going bad); I've seen curdled milk; I've smelled sour milk - but never, ever have I seen or smelled mold in a milk carton!!

Anyone else?

Lactaid milk is quite expensive, so obviously it will be going back to the supermarket tomorrow for an exchange..

Ewwwwww!!! I've never had that happen or even heard of it. Yuck. Good thing she didn't drink it!

YUCK!!! i've NEVER heard of or seen mold in milk! i've seen spoiled, funky-smelling, chunky milk, but never moldy milk! thank goodness she didn't drink it!

I think that type of milk has quite a long "shelf life" until it is opened, and then it's only good for just a few days. Maybe your carton was faulty, and actually open a little when you bought it? That might explain why it went bad so fast.

That's pretty gross. On that note, I never understand why, when someone tastes something that's gone bad, why they want me to taste it as well. DH does that to me all the time. He'll take a bite of something, make a face, and then will say something like "arghhh, this tastes really gross, here... try it and tell me what you think." That's OK, I'll take his word for it.

:rotfl:

That's GROSS! And weird! I've never had that happen... that's certainly something to call and tell the manufacturer..

and either call the company or go online and file a complaint..they will want the codes off the carton, the exp date, the UPC, where it was purchased..etc...they need to know all these things so they can investigate..in most cases the company will refund your money as well as send you coupons for free items..I know it won't help you when she needs more Lactaid now...but it might help the company stop it from happening again!
btw..I had to lol when you said she came in and said taste this, it taste funny (or odd, or bad, or weird), my husband does that to me all the time..what makes them think we want to taste it when they already know there's something wrong with it?..lol

I had a similar experience with a container of formula. Ironically with Similac who about 3 months later had the beetle recall. Anyways, it was the ready to feed liquid one and I shook it, opened it up and it smelled really weird. And it was all chunky! yuck! I knew it wasn't right so I obviously didn't feed it to DD but I called the Similac customer service number right away. They told me that they did not know why that container would be like that (the expiration date was over a year away), but they sent me a box with prepaid postage so I could send them the container so they could test it to determine if there was something wrong with it. They also refunded my money and sent me coupons. They called me a week later after they tested it and said that there was nothing wrong with it, that it must have just settled during shipping. I'm telling you right now, that was some serious settling. It was gross.

OP, I think you should contact customer service. Let them know what you found. Sounds yucky to me!

yuck, I just think it sounds funny that formula is good for a whole year. LOL.

Not trying to offend. All of my kids had at least the occasional formula. Some more than others. Just funny that foods can be processed and packaged to last for so long!

EWWW! Definately call the company first. My DD drinks the Walmart brand Lactaid. I need to check it now

It's weird. My stepdad and I were just talking last night about the expiration date on milk. It used to go out of date so fast you had to guzzle it to use it up before it went bad. The milk (regular and lactose free) that I bought last weekend had JANUARY exp dates :scared1: I kind of wonder what all these preservatives and such are doing to us.

I haven't had that happen with non expired milk, but I have had it happen with shredded cheese. I remember making scrambled eggs and throwing in some Sargento shredded cheese. First bite and all I could taste was mould. Ugh one of those tastes you never forget. Gross.
