Have you ever cut a holiday short and come home early?

Just once on a beach vacation, my daughter was in the pool and tells me she's itchy, ok weird. I take her out of the pool and take a look, she is breaking out in chicken pox...... perfect timing...NOT

Twice, sorta.

My mother in law got sick on a Disney cruise. We had to get off in Mazatalan and she had surgery there in Mexico. We ended up getting home the same day we would have been home had we stayed on the ship.

The other time was a Disney World trip. There was a death in the family and we left a day early so my wife could make the funeral.

Not me but my parents did about 20 years ago.

They flew to San Francisco for a vacation and when they landed they found out that my grandma had taken a turn for the worse so they caught the first flight home. They like to call it the time they flew to San Francisco for lunch lol

We tell a story of flying cross-country for the weekend. We started a planned 10 day trip total at WDW and were supposed to go on to NYC and then Vermont. Our 2nd day my husband started having major discomfort that turned out to be a tailbone abcess. We had to turn around and head back home to Oregon the next day. Poor guy was white as a sheet the whole way home.

Yes - twice. Both times due to a blizzard coming in and since we drove, we just left a day early and got ahead of the blizzard.

Yep - on 9/11 :( DH and I had been in San Fransicso for a couple of days and then went to my sister's house. We were supposed to be there one more night to celebrate her and her DH's birthdays with them. But after spending the morning watching events of 9/11, we packed up and drove home. My mom had been watching our DD (3 1/2 at the time) for us and all we wanted to do was get back to her.

My in-laws were both in a nursing home in the same room. Both were doing well at the time we thought. We took what was supposed to be a long weekend and went to the beach. While on the beach, I got a call the DMIL had passed. That was a long trip home. I drove home as DH and DS were too upset to drive. DH has always regretted not being home when his mom passed. DFIL passed 3 days later.

We rented a huge house on the beach with a group of friends a couple of summers ago. The rental was Sunday to Sunday
Most decided to leave earlier on Saturday since it's about a 7 hour drive home. One other family decided to stay until Sunday with us. We had a great evening out to dinner... came back to the huge house where the kids were running around playing hide and go seek. No one could find the youngest girl, who was 7. Then we heard her yelling for help. She got stuck in the elevator. DH and her dad got the tools out and eventually pried the safety door open while I comforted my crying DS and the little girls crying older sister. It took about 45 minutes and she was out, cool as a cucumber the entire time. After that it put a damper on the rest of the trip. We just decided to pack up and go home.

15 or so years ago DH and I booked 4 days at a ski resort in the Rockies at New Years. Our DS was little then and it was a really big deal for us to be going away for some special time on our own. The weather turned ugly after Christmas and we drove 300 miles through a raging blizzard to get there on NYE. We hit the hill the next day at temperatures in the mid-20's below (F) :cold:. I gutted out 3 runs before giving up and since the forecast wasn't for any improvement, I knew I couldn't make myself go back out in those conditions again. We ended up leaving with 2 days of hotel and lift tickets paid-for and unused because the town (Jasper) didn't have very much to interest us beside skiing.

If so for what reason.

Yep, sure did! Just last Feb/Mar left Disney two days early as we had had it with the cold, wind, and rain. Unlike some, we don't consider just enduring and making the most of it, would just rather be at home. To each their own - no judgement! :goodvibes Was also at Disney Dec '10 when it was sooo cold and freezing - stuck it out then, not anymore, just not worth it to us.

A week long summer trip to Hilton Head, SC got cut short when they evacuated the island due to an incoming hurricane.

A long weekend in Philadelphia got cut short due to a massive approaching snowstorm.

A week long summer trip to Virginia Beach got cut short at the beginning and the end due to a huge wind storm the day before we were supposed to go to Va Beach. It toppled 6 trees and left us without power for 2 days. DH has to return home early for a big retirement party at work. All the East coast big wigs were going to be there, so he had to make an appearance. We got 5 days at the beach vs 7.

Only once and it was on a solo Disney trip. I just wasn't feeling well and left a few days early. Disney was very nice about refunding the room for the remaining nights.

Jetsetters!

A few years ago DH and I left our beach vacation a day early. It was a Saturday to Saturday rental. Most of the week the weather was fine, but it rained heavily all day Thursday, and the forecast was the same for the next few days. So we packed up and left Friday morning.

Before exH and I were married, some friends invited us to their campground for a 3 day July 4th weekend. It was miserably hot and I wasn't at all enthused about going in the first place. After a horrible day and a half, I just couldn't handle it any longer. We apologized to the hosts and they understood. We went back in the early fall and it was much nicer, but I'm really not a campground kind of girl.
My husband teases me that my idea of camping is staying in a Super 8 motel.

He's right. ;)

Yes - we were in northern California for the Loma Prieta earthquake. Fantastic! We managed to snag a rental car and escape over the mountains Sound of Music-esque) to Reno and to fly home. I haven't been back to California since then.

Yes. DH and I had to cut our honeymoon short so he could be back for a job interview.

My parents had to cut a vacation short because my grandmother passed away the night after they left. It was pre-cell phone days, so we had to wait 2 days until they called home t o let them know.

DW & I came home early from San Antonio due to bad weather.

I left 1/2 day early from a hunting trip in Colorado after basically falling/sliding down the mountain the previous day. Was supposed to hunt one final morning & head out that evening. Instead, I broke camp & headed home as soon as I woke up. As it turns out, that was a good move. Hit snow crossing Monarch Pass and I was just an hour East when I heard that the highway patrol had closed the pass. I would have been stuck for a couple days.

:offtopic: Glad you missed the worst of the snow coming over Monarch. My FIL has some hairy stories about that Pass (he lived in Gunnison for 20 years). I do love that drive, though! I'm a New England girl, so you can imagine my awe the first time we were there. I have a picture of me sitting in a snowbank on June 21!

I can't think of a time we've cut short a trip. We've extended trips for a variety of reasons- bad weather we didn't want to drive through- or going on vacation a day early to arrive before a hurricane, flu that made return travel impossible, and one time we left vacation on the planned day but instead of driving home to MI we went to NC for an uncle's funeral :sad1: but I can't think of any time we've cut short a vacation.

You just reminded me of a second time we came home early. I was on vacation in Tennessee with my parents when I was a teenager. I had been sick and had just started some medication. I woke up one morning itchy, and looked in the mirror. I was covered in hives. A call to my Dr and I was placed on 2 benedryl twice a day. Benadryl makes me very sleepy. After not being able to get me to agree to do anything, we left for home. Trying to vacation when all you want to do is sleep is not fun.

Little off topic, but my scariest trip over Monarch, we were Westbound downhill, and a runaway tanker truck came barreling down the hill doing about 90. I floored it to try to get away from him, but he was on me too quick and he just whipped into the oncoming lane & passed. Somehow, he managed to make the curves at that speed and he went right on by the runoff ramp.

The first time was when the boys were young and they were acting up so bad I put them in the car and drove back to Illinois from Colorado in the middle of our planned stay.

So wait a minute! You really did "turn this car around right now"? I think that might be the first time in Parenting history that has actually happened!
