you did not want to put a credit card down for incidentals?? Some hotels will hold an enormous amount for several days on your credit card and an even larger amount if you use your debit/check card. I was almost denied on a business trip at a Hilton owned hotel in Philadelphia because I did not want to use my personal card (they held $50 a night) and at the time I did not have a company card...I had to wait for my co worker to show up and put my room on her company card.....just curious if anyone else has had this problem....

I was traveling for my company and I had taken my credit card for any incidentals....we do not have high limits on our cards and the one I took had a $300 limit...they were going to put a $250 hold on my card that would not release until a couple of days after I left...I do not mind if they hold $25-50 for the stay but some of these hotels get a bit extreme...They were not going to let me check in without a credit card even though my company had a contract with them for several rooms....BTW this happened several years ago and I have since got a company card...I have learned to call the hotel first to find out what their policies are. I am just curious if this has happened with anyone else.

I've travelled a lot and I have a low limit on my credit card, on purpose but by low I mean a few thousand - 300 is almost no credit card at all. I have never had a hotel jeopardize my limit. I was a travel agent for 27 years and never had a client complain about it either. Not saying it didn't happen to you, just saying it's not the norm.

We don't have any credit cards and only use our debit card and we've had this issue many times with rental cars and hotels. We just have to really budget it right because for a rental car they hold about $300 and it stays for awhile before it falls off. I've actually had my bank call and confirm the actual charge so I could get the money back off hold. We were on vacation on the Big Island last time this happened.

I'm sure this is when someone chims in "that's why you should have a credit card" but honestly, I don't want a credit card! Normally life is just fine without them.

Coming back from bankruptcy several years ago I am happy with a $300 credit card...this is also great for traveling because less damage can be done if it is lost or stolen....There are such differences with the hotels...The one in Philadelphia was $50 a night, where as most Hilton Garden Inn's I have stayed at are $25-30 total. Like I said, I now call where I will be staying to find out their policy before I even get there to make sure I have what I need, but have noticed that some will not mind when I say, I do not have a card to put down.

I only have debit cards too. Orbitz accidentally put a hold twice different flights I was lookng at. So my debit card was pretty much up to the limit because of the second hold for $900.

I didn't think there was going to be a problem at the hotel as I had the $300 for my hotel room in cash. I'd just be careful about the incidentals & extras on the trip, until the Orbitz hold fell away.

But when I got to the hotel, they wouldn't let me pay for the room in cash, even though I was paying as I arrived. They wanted it only on a card. It was mainly because they were concerned with me trashing the room and skipping out before the maid found out when cleaning, later in the day. If I paid in cash and smashed the TV, they'd have no way of recovering the money for it. :sad2:
