Have you ever been able to upgrade to concierge at check-in?

Tried to at the GF this past May, we were quoted the difference between rack rates. I think it was somewhere around $345 to upgrade per night.

This past August, I was upgraded to concierge for free at the GF. I had booked a lagoon view room, and at check-in, I found out they were upgrading me. That was a nice surprise, and it sure helped my breakfast bill.

I tried to upgrade to Concierge Level at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I had a deluxe savanna view booked. The CM told me it would be $120 extra per night. This was in Dec. 2001.

Yes, we upgraded from Deluxe Savannah view to Concierge during check-in at AKL and no, I won't say the cost. The circumstances at the resort when we checked in could be very different than those when someone else checks-in. I don't want people expecting and DEMANDING the same price 'someone on the Internet got'. Just ask, as I did, what the cost would be to upgrade. We considered the price reasonable and paid it.

Good luck -

I see. We are just trying to decide whether we should book concierge now (I really don't care about all the pre-planning, we won't be using it), or ask at check-in and see what they can do for us. Any advice?

Part of concierge is having the advance itinerary services and any special requests you might have.

If you wait until you get there, you miss out on that.

We don't have any special requests and don't need any advance planning. That is what I am saying. It would seem like a waste If I book it now. We like the lounge. So I was thinking that maybe we should just ask at check-in and see if they can give us a discounted rate.

It depends on how bad you want to stay in concierge. Although upgrades are sometimes available, there are plenty of times when concierge is full - especially if you are going at a busy time of year, or are looking to get AKL -CL on a sunrise safari day. We've had times we've gotten an upgrade (rate undisclosed) and times when it wasn't available.

If it doesn't really matter to you, wait and take your chances. If it will make or break your stay, book it now. Good luck making you decision, and I hope you have a great trip!

In general, the price to upgrade categories at check in will be the difference in rack rate between those categories.

There may be an occasional happy surprise with a free or discounted upgrade, but this is not the norm.

I have stayed concierge several times, but usually booked it with a discount code in advance. On other occasions, I've booked a standard room and inquired about concierge availability at check in. Several times, I've been told there is no availability. Other times, I've been quoted the full difference in rack rates as my upgrade price.

If you really want concierge, you should book it. If you don't care whether you get it or not, you can take your chances- just be prepared to be happy with the category you originally booked or to pay the full difference if you find you CAN upgrade.

For us, the $70 a day would be worth it. We'd spend at least that on breakfast and dinner for the kids (our kids are 2 and 4, so the concierge offerings fed them breakfast and dinner). For us the convenience was also worth it--our kids had milk and snacks whenever they needed them, I also grabbed a few pieces of fruit to have in the stroller during the day for snacks.

I agree with you, Taurus--I don't use them at ALL for advance planning. I do that myself anyway!

I say go for it!

So what should I do? Go for it for the extra $75-$80 a night, or take my chances at check-in, maybe for a rack rate, maybe for less, or maybe for free?

If you know you want to stay concierge, yes.

or take my chances at check-in, maybe for a rack rate,
This is possible, but don't count on availability.

maybe for less,
Though possible, not likely.

or maybe for free?
Theoretically possible, HIGHLY unlikely.

Only you can decide how much you care about the room you're in, and how much $$ it's worth to you. If you want it, book it. If you really don't care, take your chances.

We will most likely be checking-in late, say between midnight and 1am. Will there just be 1 person at the desk? Don't they usually have to call someone to get approval to upgrade? Will there be anyone avail at this time of night? Do you think they will most likely just quote me the rack rate upgrade price.

Also if we get a garden view room, is it possible at check-in to upgrade to a lagoon view? Or do they already have your room assigned and ready to go?

Ahh so many questions, im sorry, we are just really anxious, especially about checking-in so late.

Without knowing what resort you're asking about, it's hard to say.

At some (most? all?) resorts, only the concierge desk checks in concierge guests... don't know how they would handle unexpected middle of the night check ins.

Any front desk CM can probably upgrade you at rack rate with no extra approval necessary.

The answers are the same whether you're upgrading from standard view to lagoon, or to concierge. An upgrade to a higher cost room will normally be made at the actual rack rate difference in cost. And if the resort or the room category you want is full, they can't move someone out to move you in. :)

Pixie dust SOMETIMES could POSSIBLY happen. Don't expect it, and certainly don't count on it.

Almost always, you'll get what you booked and paid for.

I'm talking about the Beach Club. And I mean can the person offer us a deal without asking someone? Not a rack rate.
