We have been to WDW too many times to count. (it's up over 22 since 1999, I lost count) We always wondered how families got chosen for things.
One day, about 7 years ago, we entered AK at RD, and instead of running to the rides, we walked around and looked at the tarantula a CM was carrying around in a see-through box. As we were being educated on the myths of tarantulas, another CM approached us and asked if we would like to be the "1st family" for the Kilimanjaro Safari ride? We said sure, she said "follow me" and we practically ran to the ride. We got our own truck, they announced us as the "1st family" with our name and state we were from, our truck was the 1st out. We also got magic FP's. Good for every ride that offers a FP in AK. (only could be used once).
IT WAS AWESOME. Kids still talk about it today.
