Have you done a diners drive-ins and dives crawl?

We haven't gone places because of the show, but we have been to the places prior to him going there. 2 local ones, both he liked. One I hate, one I love.

The thing is, you don't get on the show by being the best.
You get on the show by having a back story and a dish, that will act as a hook to interest viewers. The rest is fluff from customers that are already loyal to the place. You have to have an invite to eat while the show is filming. You actually have to close your restaurant for two days or so and you're not compensated. All food you see, the restaurant pays for. A restaurant can't pay to get on the show, nor will it be payed for being on it. The publicity is the pay. Guy will sit down with only a couple of lucky tables. The rest, the responses were elicited by the crew. Places are heavily scrutinized, back stories rehearsed, and lines are given and memorized for the show. But what happens if despite the scrutiny the place ends up bad or unkempt or something? The show pulls out and you don't get filmed. They film several while they're in a city even though they don't appear together.

I've seen a few of his own failed restaurants but didn't go in. Once was for a trip to Russian River Brewing in downtown Santa Rosa, which typically has a long line. Tex Wasabi's was about a couple blocks down and had barely any business. Of course Guy's partner bought him out.

Even if I don't necessarily think he's anything more than a showman, he's generally been a pretty upstanding citizen. Whenever there's a disaster in the area with displaced people and first responders in force, he'll be out there with his catering gear serving food for free. Maybe it's for the publicity, but I'm not going to fault him for that. He does make decent money with his catering business though. I remember there was the Super Bowl 50 pregame party he had for $700 a head at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara parking lot. I'm still wondering why take up a parking lot since parking for hotel guests is supposed to be one of the things that's at a premium during the Super Bowl.

We have been to some of the featured restaurants in Maine, Cape Cod, Charleston SC and one right outside of Newport Rhode Island. We really like them all! The one in Charleston we would NOT have stepped foot in, if not for Guys show!!! Ha, ha!!
Which one in Charleston? I live 80 miles from there and love to try the stuff on these shows...yet I've pretty much been unimpressed by all of the ones I've tried. I think they hype them up so much that I'm expecting to be blown away.

I couldnt remember the name of the place, so I had to go and look at Facebook to remind myself!! It was actually almost exactly a year ago that we were there!

It was the Tattooed Moose. We had sandwiches and they were excellent.

Like I said above, had we not seeked out the place, because of the show, we NEVER would have stepped foot into the place!!! It was a "dive" for sure!! Ha,ha!!

You'll have to let me know if you have been there and what you thought!

I haven't heard of that one but I'm willing to give it a try! Most of the time the little hole in the wall joints are the best! I always try to ask the locals where they like to eat when I go out of town. Thanks for the tip!

There used to be an app called "TV Foodie" that was amazing. It is so sad that it is no longer supported. You could sort by show, or location and included an episode guide and reviews. The kids and I spent almost a year flying around the country on weekends trying places from different shows. We did a few DDD places but I couldn't tell you which ones.
