Have any of you joined DVC with family members?

I have really been looking at all the info and considering buying in, but possibly along with my parents, if we get a bigger point package, they can use part of it and we can use the other, and I figure maybe every other year we can all take a bigger vacation together. Has anyone else done this or something similar.

I joined with my friend, each of our names without our spouses are on the deed. That way each person can make their own reservation. We splint the bill, we bought a small resale, and paid cash. When dues are due whoever's turn to go that year puts in ontheir disney visa to earn the points, and we split the dues. My family goes even year she goes odd. If someone needs more points they borrow from the next year and then that person rents back the amount from someone else and has them transfer them. That allows us to use the 11 month window at BWV at Christmas. So far so good, we would like to add on. And we rented more points and went last year too.

My mom bought in with us. She is divorced from my dad. She travels with us almost everywhere go. I could not imagine going to WDW without her. (She took me every year since I was 3 years old) so when DH and I started talking about it then decided we didn't have the money she offered to give it to us some moeny towards it. But we would only accept if she was on the deed.

Afterward she was so happy she did it with us. It is a gift that will keep me going to Disney until I am 80 years old....long after she is gone. :guilty:

Now I am an only child so it worked out fine for us. My 2DS just adore her and it is GREAT to have the extra help in Disney of her there....not to mention a babysitter!

We have it agreed if we use the points nonother for Disney together we will split them. We want to take the cruise and she does not so we will "rent" her portion of the points from her.

:cheer2: 3 cheers for my mom :cheer2:

It can work fine as long as the relationships work fine. Be aware that if anyone involved gets a divorce or files bankruptcy, you may be forced to sell the entire contract by the courts. This may seem impossible now, but things can change over the many many year life span of a DVC contract.

It depends on how many points you are thinking of getting. For example, if you were thinking of going in together on a 300 point contract, why not instead each buy a 150 point contract. You can transfer points from one contract to the other or book some days on one contract and other days on the other contract and link the reservations together. This way if something happens, the entire contract won't be at risk.

Also if at a later time you want to cut back on the number of points you have, you cannot split a large contract into smaller parts. But if it is two contracts your parents could sell theirs while you keep yours.

My husband and I bought last year and we put my brother on the deed. It is really ours, but I wanted my DB to come with us sometime and bring his kids. I wanted him to be able to have the discounts of DVC too. (Aren't I a nice sister!!!?) :lmao: I knew I could get him to go once in awhile if he is getting a deal! :goodvibes I wanted to put my older brother on too, but after he signed the papers, his wife got all weird about it and was mad at him, so we redid the papers. Oh well, his loss! The funny thing about that is, if I could ever get him to take his family there, he would probably buy in a heartbeat! :rotfl2:

Personally, I would be reluctant to purchase with anyone else except my spouse just because too many things can happen. If a parent had to go into a nursing home, wouldn't their share be considered an asset? Putting a sibling's name on means they own part of it. If a divorce or financial issues come along, their share would be considered with their assets. I guess I've just seen too many situations go bad.

I like yeahdisney's way of doing it. Who better to buy in with than a best friend? Those we choose are so different than those we are born to love :)
Not that I wouldn't go in with my parents, they too are my best friends, but then there's the "what about me" sisters issue. Enjoy every single trip with your best friends contract.

Buying in with ANYONE else has potential for disaster. What if there is a divorce, a rift, one of the parties can't or won't pay there share, or one of the parties just plain wants out? I would suggest each of you buy a smaller contract seperately. Smaller contracts are easier to sell if you need to. You could still vacation together if you so choose. Good luck on the decision.

Thanx for the thoughts everyone. I think doing 150 pts. for us and 150 pts for my parents is a good idea. Was talking more to DH and we will probably be making a decision by the end of this year, depends on how his new business works out. I know the prices will be higher by then, but I don't want to jump on something now when the price is a little lower, I would rather pay a little more and be more secure with my financial decision at the time, which I wouldn't be right now.

We will be in the Tampa area in July and I am going to get my parents to take a ride over to Orlando so we can get more info and see the accommodations at SSR.

Much like mommyceratops, I own with my Dad.

He initially bought points while visiting WDW a few years ago. He wanted his grandchildren, (my 2 children) to have the benefit of wonderful accomodations and Disney vacations for years to come, and after 2 international adoptions and private school, DH and I knew DVC would not be in our budget for a long time.

He bought a second contract and recently added my name to both deeds. He is in his 70s, and wanted to enjoy trips to Disney with the grandkids :grouphug: now, so he bought it. We were very surprised! It is a wonderful gift for my family. I have no concerns about his name being on the deed. He and Mom are divorced and bankruptcy is not an issue.

My brother has a big BW contract and I have a small OKW one. Both of our names are on each contract as owners and it has worked out great for us for the 6 years we have owned our DVC points. Has been easy to borrow and transfer between our contracts when needed. I have "rented" extra points from him when I have needed them and we are both very happy with the deal.
