Actually the current track layout is exactly the same as the old one.
During the refurbishment they gutted it, dug down deeper to provide better support, put in new rails (smoother ride), better lifts/break systems, better effects than the giant cookie. It is the same ride layout, it just feels like it has changed.
I think lights on would be a novelty, chance to see how the effects work.. not as thrilling of a ride but boring.. nah!
I believe when they have a ride safety error each rocket gets stuck in a brake area. Then the CMs walk up to each rocket, give it a push to clear the area. Or at least that is what we are seeing in this vid. I have watched a very short vid of lights on before, you see CM pushing the rocket, but it was near the end of ride. The new ride system might have electronic controls.. no need for someone to push start each rocket thru the brake zone.
I'm very curious about how rides work, backstage stuff, etc. I had the opportunity to walk backstage from Main Street to the exit of Space Mountain (crowd control after parade during Christmas break). Nothing too spectacular to look at, but it was fun to wave to the CMs as we walked past and thank them for working hard at what they do best!
