DH and I made the round trip drive from Jersey to HHI via I-95 a few weeks ago - the part around the construction in Delaware was THE WORST I have EVER seen anything like that!!!

We will be making that trip again in Feb so I am starting to look for alternate routes around the construction. Will be getting a trip tic from any/every travel benefit we have, will prob call state tourism bureaus for detailed state/transportation maps and will buy maps if necessary.

But I figure that the best info is going to come from those of us who are used to driving instead of flying. Will appreciate any assistance that anyone can offer.

I'm from Northern NJ. Mind me asking how long it took you to drive--minus the terrible Delaware construction? Just trying to see if it's doable with two little kids. I don't like road trips.

Which construction are you referring to? The part just before the Maryland/Delaware border OR the part a few miles north of that where an overpass is/was being worked on? The section just before the border was finished last week before Thanksgiving, thank goodness. The back-up there was just HORRIBLE!

(I live in Delaware and try to avoid 95 as much as possible.)

We drove from the jersey shore to WDW on Saturday Oct. 28th and made our return trip on Sunday Nov.12th. I don't remember hitting any traffic there at all. Maybe we just got lucky at whatever time of day we traveled through there. It usually takes us about 17 to 18 hours to drive straight through, including restroom and quick food stops.

we do the drive in two days - gave up driving straight thru years ago - too old for that now! we leave central jersey about 8am on sat and arrive in florence, sc arpund 5:30pm [the last of the five exits for florence]...that includes a rest/gas stop at the maryland house, lunch and a gas stop at aunt sarah's just into n.c, driving straight on 95 with no diversions to 295, and a husband who relies on his radar detector more than he should!

that allows us to depart florence around 8am and drive about 6 hrs to orlando with a breakfast stop about a half hour down the road from florence.

we find it to be a reasonable feat - once we get out of jersey! the nj tpk is really the worst part of the drive! and it really gets to be a breeze once you're out of virginia!

my sister and b-i-l drove to fl for years with 3 kids - doing the trip in 2 days - and leaving at like 4am with the kids still in pjs and asleep. they would get to florence early enough so that the kids could play at the motel and have an early dinner and bedtime - and then be out of the motel around 6am the following morning. and they made those trips before mini-vans and in-car dvd players! they made a lot of trips playing the license plate game before the kids got their portable tape players!

her daughter is now making a similar trip when she drives back and forth from western south carolina to central jersey with her 3 children...but she has the mini-van and in-car dvd player!

btw - i also signed up with an outfit called trip rewards and we stay at their motels so that i earn redeemable boints for those stays. rooms cost $40 - $50 and offer at least a continental b-fast each morning; and i get 2 $25 gift cards with each trip.

thanx for the report! makes my heart sing to know that the md/de border is finished! coming back from hhi on the sunday after veteran's day both of the projects, the rain and the travelers made life miserable! taking traffic down to one lane was unforgiveable! I95 is always a busy road - i have so much sympathy for those who have to commute on that road!

hope you don't mind if i check back with you in a couple of months for an update!
