Have a non-stop on Delta from MSY?NO you don't

I have never had a flight change by even five minutes that I wasn't notified by Delta. They have notified me by email and have left messages on my answering machine. Perhaps they have a lot of notification to do for more upcoming flights. May is still a long way off. I think they would have let you know.

Forgive me if I misread your statement. But you are concerned with a flight that is over 8 1/2 months away? The New Orleans tragedy is still so fresh, I don't think any of the airlines knows for certain yet which routes it will be flying almost a year from now. My guess is that Delta would have contacted you closer to your date when airports are back open and flights have been reestablished. They couldn't possibly give you any information right now because 1) they don't have any and 2) there very well may be a Nonstop flight back in service in 8 months.

I would relax and see how this tragedy plays out. Start contacting the airlines closer to your date when you know for sure that the NO airport is or isn't up and running.

And, Have a great trip!

I don't think I would be so upset about something that is so far off. Like Independent pointed out, there are more important things in life to worry about other than whether or not you have a direct flight.

Delta may be declaring bankruptcy soon. I would keep a close eye on them and see what happens.

I don't really know what I would expect from my airline that far from departure.

I booked our October tickets in April. The American website won't let you register for e-mail notification of changes to your flights until you are 90 days or less from departure. I would say if you were 90 days away from your trip and they didn't tell you about the changes then it would be a customer service issue. For now I would just sit back and see what happens. If you feel strongly about it then you can ask for a refund, but depending on your ticket restrictions they may not give your money back.

Even if Katrina had never occurred, several changes could happen in the 8+ months between now and your flight time. Most airlines -- and I'm not just talking about Delta -- revise their schedules every 2 or 3 months. The flight times could change by a matter of minutes, or by a matter of hours; a non-stop could disappear and then two months later reappear.

Customer contact regarding flight changes varies from airline to airline, and I'm not sure what Delta's SOP is in that regard. I wouldn't be so quick to blast Delta for poor customer service on this.

Many frequent travellers and professionals post regularly on the Transportation Board. I'm going to move this thread over there, since it's more of a transportation issue than a Katrina issue.

Hubby is a medallion skymiles member.

He had a flight change for November...that he happened to notice..basically a connection through Salt Lake City--but his flight arrived after the connecting flight takes off. It was remedied when we got to the airport for his most recent flight.

That being said---I would just watch it...they will have to at least refund the ticket price if nothing can be done b/c they cannot fulfill the contract you purchased.

Flights are resuming out of New Orleans...and 8+ months from now...they could be back on line there.

The catastrophe is still fresh...and it is just probably easier for them to write the market off for now and then resume it when they are comfortable to know that they will be able to fulfill the flights.

Delta seems to work flights 45-60 days from departure. Expecting notification for a flight 8+ months away just isn't reasonable. When booking that far in advance, its best to keep an eye on your flight for changes as you have done.

It may be filling Chapter 11, which is what nearly every other legacy carrier has done in the past four years. Nothing to worry about.

And yes I think expecting notice 8.5 months before your trip is a little much, especially since there could be many other time and route changes. Some flights change on a MONTHLY basis.

Generally airlines notify in order. So those who are flying next week get notified first. Since OP is 8 months out he/she is way down the list.

I suggest you always keep an eye out since changes can get made and the early bird gets the worm in terms of the best accomations. In the OPs case he/she may even have enought time to get a refund and rebook on another airline. Of course flying out of MSY is all up in the air!

Are there really people planning to just show up at the airport in New Orleans for scheduled flights? Did you honestly need Delta to tell you that the airport was closed and is working out its plan to get back up to speed? Presumably you were checking with them because you already knew this. If I were Delta i would assume that people either a) watched the news or b)if they didn't see the news - had no power/home/etc. and were not particularly worried about vacation plans. I would be focused on getting stranded tourists out, helping people relocated to families etc.

There's a reason I check my Song flights everyday. Delta/Song tend to change flight times by a bit here and there and sometimes even do away with a flight and combine it with another one. My flight numbers aren't even flying yet....they don't start until early Nov!!! So, even though my return flight has already changed by 15 minutes, I'm pretty sure my flight down will change also. Always double check and see if there are any changes happening. It only takes a few minutes.
