if you aren't taking the disney transportation to and from the airport, can you still put the yellow tags on and will the luggage be taken to the resort for you?

We are renting a car, but not sure if I would have to get my luggage or not..

Thanks.. just having a brain skip at the moment..

No. They wait until you check in at the Magical Express desk before they load your luggage. They asked us for our claim check tags when we checked in. Your luggage doesn't go with you on the bus anyway, it comes to resort later.

This is a link to a sticky over on the transportation board. Basically it says you can do it, but you take risks to do so. The first post says it all:

Okay...here's the deal. We get a ton of posts regarding this issue. If a guest calls Disney and asks if they can tag their bags but not ride the bus, Disney will tell them no, someone has to ride the bus. That is Disney's official stand if a guest calls and asks about it.
In all reality, if a guest tags their checked bags, but does not ride the DME bus to the resort, their bags will, in all probability, still get to their resort. Disney has a contract with MCO that states all DME tagged bags will be transported to WDW resorts.

Now....the only issue you may run into is this....
You tagged 3 bags. You get to your resort, using a towncar or rental car. You do not checkin at the DME welcome counter. You get to your resort, get checked in, and then head off to a park. You return to your room, many hours later, assuming your bags will be there, waiting, in your room. But, you find only 2 bags in your room! So, you call Bell Services and start the search. The airlines have a window in which you should be submitting a claim for missing/misdirected bags....this window may have passed by the time you realize you have missing bags. Of course, WDW/DME may have just sent your missing bag to the wrong resort.

So...long story short....Disney tells you that you have to ride the bus to get your luggage delivered. Disney will move all yellow, DME tagged bags, from MCO to WDW resorts...whether or not you are on a DME bus.

As long as you are aware of what 'could' happen, do what you wish. We have not seen reports of missing baggage here. It just doesn't happen very often...at least we aren't hearing of it happening.

There is no need for debate...this is how it works, plain and simple.

One option, since there is a risk if your luggage is missing is to check in at the ME desk and then not get on the bus. Once you check in and enter the "cattle chutes" they have no idea who you are. The only question is, where are the rental car desks in relation to the ME desk?

I'm not sure they have no idea who you are. They do scan your ME ticket one more time when you are actually boarding the bus.

When we took the ME in May they had changed checkin from the past. You don't go to the desk to check in you go to the CM at the entrance to the line and they tear off a page from the ME voucher. Then you line up for your resort. When you board your bus they scan your voucher. They then scan again on return trip. That's different than in the past for us.

Why even take the risk? If you are renting a car there should be a trunk :rotfl:, and having to wait for your luggage doesn't take that long anyway, and you'll have your luggage with you when you get your room, with having Disney deliver your items you could be waiting four to five hours before you have your things. I would just forget about having Disney deliver your luggage and bring them with you in your rental car.

Same procedure for us in January which as you said is different from previous years.
