is this normal? how long might they be down? I've been planning on going the second week of May for months and Space Mountain is my favorite =( it was only announced today as being under refurbishment starting the 6th of May

It's normal for refurbs to be announced 6 weeks out. It's also normal for them to change as other refurbs take longer than expected.

Most likely lots of refurbishments will be popping up before May 22nd without much notice.

Oh no! May will be my first trip to DLR and I was looking forward to Space and Haunted Mansion (and PP as well). :-(

Yeah I was surprised by this as well. Thankfully the opportunity opened up to move my date up one week to last week of April. Not only does the crowd situation look better but HM is up. I had to swap it for Indiana Jones but my little one can't go on that one anyway. Trying to plan Disneyland trip around refurbs is just impossible. Sometime they'll shut down rides the whole time you're there unexpectedly and while there count how many times you show up for a ride and they say it's down. I think Disneyland caters to local park visitors and has never really cared much for those that travel in or are out of country. This has always been odd to me because as the park has grown in crowds this now makes up a significant portion of the guest visitors.

Things go down without notice all the time and they really have no control over it (such as ToT being down for almost a week recently). If something is noticed, during the daily checks, that could possibly be a hazard or cause an issue with the ride then they have to shut it down and sometimes they have no way of knowing how long something will be down for. Especially with all the different things they have going on. Spring is common for refurbs anyway because it's off season. When I was planning vacations I would never go during the first part of the year because there are always more closures at that time than any other time.

Unfortunately you can never really count on a ride functioning during a trip. You could show up the morning of and have your favorite down for days. I always find the closures sadder before I leave - once in the Parks I glance at it, think 'oh well' and move on.

park hours post may 2 are not showing up for me. I wonder if they are updating them again.
