Hats in Restaurants

I haven't seen one of these threads in a long while so I'll start one. I wear ball caps all the time. When we go out to eat I usually take it off when we sit down to eat, but not always. At Disney TS restaurants, I'm usually dressed more casually and pretty much always take off my hat. My head is a high gloss though and that may bother other guests. At signature restaurants I always take off my hat before we even enter the dining area.

OK. That's what I do. What do you do and what do you think is appropriate?

I think that is very appropriate. My hairline forces me to wear a hat in the sun too, but I removed it before entering each restaurant when we were there last week.

I think it's appropriate, to take your hat off... regardless of what type of restaurant. :)

I was brought up to remove my hat upon entering any home or building...and still do to this day..!

1) It is good to discuss removing hats in eateries.
. . . of course there are some exceptions
. . . there are ladies' hats/bonnets which are acceptable to remain on the head
. . . when going through chemo and wearing a headdress (not a ballcap)
2) However, the general public has shown a severe lack of etiquette.
3) It would be nice to hand out an etiquette card when you check-in.

4) After all, it would be nice to correct
. . . people wearing hats in eateries
. . . people frequently dressing and eating like slobs
. . . people showing a lack of respect in waiting lines, or in line cutting
. . . people pushing and shoving in trying to view parades, even those already waiting in place
. . . people striking you in the back of your heels with strollers and ECVs
. . . people not controlling their kids and letting them misbehave at parks or meals

Totally agree...we're old school brought up... Disney from our first trip in 1977 to present has changed considerably in mannerisms and etiquette ... And not for the good....

Does not bother me, you are in a theme park..Now at a fancy dining establishment then yes I think you should not have a hat on..

Unless I'm in a signature restaurant outside of a theme park my hat stays on.

My DH and sons are ball cap wearers, too. Caps come off in entryways -- for dinner, church, theater, someone else's house, basically anytime they're going to sit down indoors and stay awhile. The only times they leave them on indoors is in gas stations, grocery stores, and the livestock sale barn.

I am surprised to see photos from signature restaurants where a few men have their ball caps on (park signature restaurants). Seems so strange to see people eating $40 steaks wearing ballcaps, when at home at the truck stop, people remove their caps to eat burgers and tuna melts.

No flames here! I agree completely.

Never seen a man in a ball cap in a RESORT Signature restaurant.

As it should be, that is one of the "not permitted" items that they seem to enforce..

I leave mine on in the waiting area, but as soon as they call us to be seated it comes off. In a CS restaurant, it comes off as I sit to eat.
This is only because we don't use fanny packs or back packs, so all the stuff we need is in my cargo shorts pockets so there's not alot of room to store it while waiting.

I think its great OP and for the record.. Your high shine head will not bother me in the least! lol

I'm the single mom of 3 boys.. 13, 13 & 10. Unless its the grocery store my boys always automatically take off their hats. We were in WDW in may and I was wearing a ball cap.. Walked into CHH and my youngest whispered "ma take off your hat" I never wear hats and it just didnt register.

Unless we're at a wedding, church, live theater, or a 5-star restaurant I couldn't care less if men leave their hats on. It just doesn't bother me. Reminds me of the cruise threads where people are so up in arms about others and what they wear, or don't wear. I just don't get upset over that sort of thing. My food doesn't taste any different if someone is wearing a hat or not wearing one, or wearing "appropriate clothing" or not.

I don't wear a hat in a restaurant. But why is it considered rude? It just seems like of those things where you don't wear it just because we say so.

Years and years ago it was an etiquette thing, just something that men did...remove their hats, out of respect I guess. But just as many other things have evolved and changed over the years, taking off a hat in a restaurant is more or less going by the wayside. Just as "dressing up" in general is. People wear jeans to church, they didn't used to do that either. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't judge a person on what they're wearing or if they remove, or don't remove their hat.

I've always wondered that too. I take mine off simply because it's more comfortable. In the army, you never wear a hat indoors except under special circumstances. After 36 years I just got used to taking a hat off inside.
