Have character meals always required 180 PS? We've eaten at CRT twice, but I didn't think I had made the ressie's 180 days in advance. Is this something that has recently changed?:

No, the 180 days is relatively new. It has been 90 days in the past, before that 60 days....

It's not a requirement (ie-you don't have to book at 180 days). It's offered at 180 days though.

Ok, so you can still call 90 days out and get ressies? I thought I had missed the boat for our June trip!

You might have luck but you better hurry. I believe it's easier to get now that they've increased the price so much AND require payment in full when booking (unless you are on the dining plan). Also, not everyone knows about the 180 days yet.
