Has Anyone Tried to Use Points from Their Resale Contract to Book at Restricted Resorts (Riviera, Fort Wilderness, etc.)?

Very interesting. Do you also have unrestricted contracts that are eligible to book Riv? I’m curious whether anyone w/ only restricted contracts in their membership can book Riviera.

I wonder if someone w/ restricted Riviera points has been able use them at a resort other than Riviera.

I am not a fan of the restricted product, I think part of the reason a brand new resort like the Riviera that many seem to like is so cheap on the resale market is because of the restrictions, thus, I don’t care whether DVC decides to enforce its ‘rules’ about who can book there or not. Of course I don’t own there & it’s not a resort I’m eager to stay at…so 🤷‍♀️.
In my mind this is no different from DVC allowing owners w/ multiple memberships to transfer multiple times per year even though that broke the one transfer rule, or members advertising to transfer points for $$, even though that breaks the no $ for transfers rule.

That was my next thought, we need a resale RIV owner to try and book a resort other than RIV for science!

Even if it potentially means a couple of non RIV points and then filling the rest with resale RIV 🤔

Fascinating thread, I actually really like the look and feel of the website but they sure do drop a few glitches in there every few months

I just saw on DVC Fan facebook group that someone had their RIV booking cancelled because it used a combo of resale points from another resort and their RIV points. They were just notified and placed their reservation during this glitch timeframe. Has this happened to anyone else?

I think I saw this when it was initially posted but there were no comments yet. It said something like "I had booked a 2 bedroom and they cancelled it and booked me in a 1 bedroom" Was that the one?

ETA: Yep same post. I see comments now. And it was only 2 points. They did not rectify it for her either.

I just saw another post where they booked a 1 bed but were assigned a studio. They did not say what resort. Im 👀 that one

yes that is the one. It later was mentioned that MS said it was because of the glitch in booking RIV.

Not sure how it turned out for this owner, but there were always going to be some people caught by this glitch. Seems a bit unfair to simply cancel the room and move to a 1br without calling the owner first to discuss!

If DVCMC is going to cancel it either way, then I don't think it matters.

I think this is also a useful reminder of how Disney as a company can be, to put it charitably, paternalistic. They are normally very patient with guests---until they think you might be jerking them around, and then things get cold very quickly.

Well the member who booked riviera using restricted resale points MUST have known before doing so.

If you know about resale you know about restricted/un-restricted points.

This instance was only 2 resale points on a multi night 1 bedroom stay booked with a majority of direct points. I can see how that cold go unnoticed.

I’m not so sure this is true. If you hang around on the DVC sites on Facebook, you quickly realise that many people have no idea what is going on. Here is a direct quote from the FB post we are discussing to give you a flavour:

“what is the riviera restriction? If you bought a Riviera resell, you can’t book at 11 months? I thought you just couldn’t book anywhere else if it was resale. So if you buy riviera resale you have no home resort 11mo booking?”
