Has Anyone Tried to Use Points from Their Resale Contract to Book at Restricted Resorts (Riviera, Fort Wilderness, etc.)?

I'm going to try to book a cabin at Fort Wilderness soon. It's my first potential stay at a new resort where I have to work around the fact that some of my resale points were purchased after the resort restriction went into place. I have 100 resale points purchased prior to the restriction that are not affected, but I have one 25 point contract and just closed on another 100 point contract that I do not think I will be able to use at the newer resorts (Riviera, Disneyland Hotel, Fort Wilderness) because the sales were completed after the change.

Has anybody tried to book online at one of these resorts with a mix of direct and resales points? Does the system understand the restriction and block you from using them for the reservation? Or will it go through and then potentially Member Services will get involved and either cancel it or tell you to modify it?

I need about 75 points for an upcoming booking and it seems that a portion of my available points cannot be used there. I think I understand the policy change and restrictions well enough; I'm just curious on what the experience is when you try to book on the website. Anyone have experience booking a new resort and running into the resale point use restriction?

The restricted contracts will not even show up as options if you choose one of the restricted resorts.

The system is set up to prevent any resale points from being used.

All you will see is the contract that can be used. I have restricted RIV points and it only shows up when I choose RIV as a resort.

When I had my BLT restricted contract and chose RIV, it didn’t show as an option.

The system can tell which points were bought pre resale restrictions and which ones were bought after.

Guys... I think I somehow found a way to use mixed points at restricted resorts... I was just now messing around with booking to see how it treats direct vs resale and managed to get a mixed point reservation for the Riviera to go through under very specific conditions with some of my direct RIV and some of my recent resale points that definitely aren't grandfathered...

I was typing up a response about how the system knows which are eligible and not eligible when I decided to log in and do some tests

Maybe it has to do with the big mess currently going on?

As I said, I have all the resorts I have owned under my membership showing as home resorts when I no longer own contracts at those resorts.

Oh wow that is messed up. How long has that been going on?

And after messing with it some more, I think it might even let me do a 100% confirmed original resort restricted resale contract at a newer restricted resort under the same specific conditions, though I didn't send this one all the way through. I do have the mixed night confirmed on my dashboard though. I may keep it for a bit and see if they do anything lol

Since the updates this week. Pretty weird that your restricted contract is showing an option to book.

That’s why my guess is that this is related because my dashboard doesn’t show my June or Aug 2024 UY because they have not points.

I was wondering based on your first response as I had seen all of my contracts appear when I tried it before posting this. I didn't see some not allowed like you had said, so perhaps it's the system right now.

Just tried it again and it's letting me borrow points from a Hilton Head resale contract that closed in 2023 for a stay at Riviera. I stopped once I got to the screen where you confirm your address, guests, etc. as I didn't want to follow through on the borrowing, but nothing in the system seems to be stopping me.

Are you saying Its letting you borrow points from a contract you no longer own??? Or that you just got the contract in 2023? Because holy moly the system must be really messed up then, I have never sold any contracts so all my contracts are showing correctly. But that is nuts!

No. I bought the contract in 2023 resale. So it was after the 2019 change in rules. I'm saying as far as I understand, because I bought a resale contract after 2019, that I'm not supposed to be able to use those points as one of the newer resorts (Riv, FtW, DLH). But it appears to be allowing me to do so.

Ah ok so similar to how it's letting me do some things weird too then.

Then my guess is this is a system issue from whatever is going on and I’d be very careful borrowing points to book RIV when those points are not actually eligible.

When they fix the system, I’d expect that these things won’t work and it’s possible things get canceled.

As I said, I am showing contracts as options that I no longer own..obviously with no points..so something is wrong

I can say that I don’t see my restricted RIV as an option so that part is still be working correctly.

But wow…this is a major hole in the system right now.

Wow. This system really is messed up.

Fully possible to book restricted resorts with my SSR points. In the name of science I have made a reservation.

While I totally expect this to get cancelled, this is going to be a nightmare for DVC, given the amount of users who have no idea how the system works on the best of days…

Was this all from the update on Wednesday or whatever it is? This seems like a really big deal, especially since you know like @JackosinDIS said the average user has no idea what's going on or that they weren't supposed to book a resale restricted resort with their resale points bought after 2019. I noticed the system also isn't showing my 2025 use year since I've already used all of the points in this year. Normally it would indicate we're still in the 2025 use year and have a 0 on it but hrm..

You're going to get people complaining that they wouldn't have switched if they knew they couldn't book RIV and etc. and now they're missing dates or even worse there's a hole in the middle of their stay and now nothing's available by the time they fix it..

I also can't wait for the lack of communication from DVC 😂
