Has anyone thought about the year 2041 and 2042

Wondering if anyone has thought about what will happen in the year 2041 and 2042? People are going to reserve like crazy...reservations will be hard to come by as most people will use vs bank...Also the SSR owners will have a field day making reservations after Jan 31st...although I bet Disney will come up with something...but there will still be a window of opportunity.

I'll be happy if I'm alive.

and my DH tells me I plan too far in advance!! ;) :rotfl:

I imagine as they add new resorts - they will sell past 2042 and there won't be a huge dropoff - I also bet there will be extension opportunities!!

I agree. There will be many, many new resorts with later contracts. However, I don't think that the older resorts will have lost any of their appeal and will still be as in demand as ever, just as the GF did not take away the appeal of the Poly or CR. I also doubt that Disney will ever tear down the resorts - although they may turn them into regular resorts vs. DVC. (I've wondered if this is the long term plan for DVC: to basically use it to fund the building of resorts that Disney intends to take over in 50 years.)

I also bet than many of the "original" owners that have held on to their contract the whole time will be renting their points for the last stretch.

I know I often lay awake at night worrying about this. ;)

I'm just hoping we'll have on-line reservations by then. :)

:rotfl: How true.

If I'm alive I will be enjoying my new 50 year resort connected to the new Villans theme park that expires in 2070 after having sold BCV for $200 per point 21 years ago.

At age 95 I will be among the old baby boomers who will be complaining that there aren't enough handicap rooms and so my points are of no use.

We have discussed it a number of times. It's a very interesting topic to me but most people seem to care less. Here are a few issues related to the end.
  • I do not believe the 2042 resorts will be extended.
  • I believe banking will be help someone around 2038 or 2039.
  • I believe borrowing will be limited to use years where you have the full 12 months.
  • It is fact that there are not enough units in DVC resorts to allow every member to use every point the last couple of years. Remember only one use year (Feb) will have all 12 months available at the end. Most likely options are prorating the points or some type of lottery. It could be that a voluntary option out with no fees would leave enough space as well. I do not believe DVC will give everyone full points then allow a free for all.
  • Since dues are on a calendar year basis, the dues could actually be charged that one month in 2042 but the reserves should more than handle that. Actually the dues overall should be much lower the last few years. Dues will likely be prorated based on what percent of points you get and/or can use.

I'll only be 95 then too - but I expect that DVC will limit banking and borrowing during the last few years and may have to reinstitute some form of lottery for reservations during that time. There is no way that all members will be able to use their 2041 Use Year points before January 31, 2042 - so DVC will have the responsibility to create a fair and equitable system during the last years.

Some have suggested that an extension could be instituted and that might be a partial solution - I do not believe that will happen and I would certainly not participate if it did - but even that would not solve the problem for 2041 and would merely push the problem back to another date.

IMO, the person who will make that decision is probably in Jr. High right now and is more concerned with other issues at this time. I'm certain that DVC has NOT yet made any decision about what will happen in 2041.

Stay tuned!

You know, if you ask my DS9 what he wants to be when her grows up, he says "either an Imagineer or the next Walt Disney". :rotfl:

This may be a great time to start grooming him to make that 2041/2042 decision! :)

:teeth: :teeth: Not being an 'official' baby boomer, ( I was born slightly earlier when WWII was still in full action and the troops hadn't come home yet :smooth: ), I'll just leave it up to you young kids (baby boomers) to fight it out for those HA rooms.

Think I'll just stay home and watch Pirates of the Caribbean XVIII. :thumbsup2

After Jan 31, 2042, SSR owners will have a lot fewer members competing for reservations at SSR or any other resorts yet to be built with expiration dates later than 2042. But it's unlikely that SSR owners will be able to book BCV, BWV, HHI, OKW, VWL or VB on points because as of Jan 31, 2042, those will no longer be DVC resorts. With no members paying the dues to run and maintain them, most likely the only way SSR owners can book one of them would be by calling CRO and paying cash.

I'll be 94 and my DH will be 97. If we're still alive, it will be interesting to find out what their final decision on that will be. Hopfully they'll make that decision a few years ahead of time.

But we will be able to book at the next new DVC property(and SSR)...I totaly agree I doubt BCV,BWV or VWL will continue-I think they will go into CRO.
I think OKW might be offered extensions.

Another fairly simple solution would be to keep the 2042 resorts operating (using reserve funds) from Jan 31, 2042 to Nov 30, 2042. If they also eliminated banking for a year or so, then every would have an opportunity to use their points alloted in their final use year, especially if they limited those 2042 resorts to home resort bookings only, but also allowed the 2042 members to book at 2054 resorts if nothing was available for their travel dates at their home resort. However, that may put a one year crimp in the 2054 resort availability, so those folks would definitely have to use their 11 month window that year.

Of course, it is all speculation, no one knows if Disney even has a plan...maybe they'll sell the management contract to an outside company the last few years and let them worry about it. :rotfl:

Since WDW builds a new DVC resort on property every 3 years or so, there will be 12 new DVC Resorts built by then, so there should be many choices-and yes once again much competition at 7 months.

I guess the level of competition will depend upon the relative attractiveness - or lack thereof - of the yet-to-be-built resorts. If they're SSR-like, get ready for ressie nightmares starting around late 2039. If DVC learns from their errors and stops building "DVC-lite" properties, things won't be quite as bad. Whatever, I'll be a relatively young 85 when the doors close in 2042.

Me too!!!

I still think it depends on the economy and how WDW is doing.

if great! forget about any extension and they will definitely take it back on Feb 1, 2042....

the next day OKW GV will be offer at what $20,000 a night....?

now if the economy is not that great and or WDW is having problems then I would think letting current member extend their contract would be a good marketing/company solutions.

but until it happen it is anyone guess.

the building will be in great shape - that is what WE are paying for in the maintence fees.

I think of all of them OKW will be torn down and the land used for something else.
Look at the amount of land OKW covers and the size of the rooms. The other DVC resorts following have smaller rooms and certainly less land (except for SSR).
Disney could build a large premium resort with all that space.

Right now I am paying $1836 maintenance fees for my 430 points ($153 a month) and the fees will keep climbing. At some point I may not be able to afford DVC.
