directly from disney? I did (with my year date starting in December) and my confusion is this: I was told that I would get points from 2014 and my 2015 points and on December 1st I will be getting my additional points....am i correct in understanding that?

Yes 2015 use year is Dec 1 15 to Dec 1 16. You are now getting the points from Dec 1st 14 to Dec 15.

If you bought after Dec 1st then you wouldn't get 2013 points.

So you're not getting last year points..you're getting full current year points.

Actually the December use years would be:

2014 is December 1, 2014 - November 30, 2015

2015 is December 1, 2015 - November 30, 2016

2016 is December 1, 2016 - November 30, 2016

It will take time but eventually you will get the December UY down pat. But I have to admit that some times I still have to write it down to figure out my use year months and we purchased in May 2009.

As posted here often, the guides often make it seem like they gave you something extra (points) for buying direct when they really give you what you paid for.

If we buy a June UY in a couple of weeks, will 2014 points be on our contract?

No because you are in your 2015 UY.

June 2015 has already happened.

If you buy a UY month that hasn't happened yet, those are still in their 2014 UY.

Would it be recommended select a later use year then? We are wanting to travel predominately in June with a few trips in between some years.

Also, we are wanting to take a trip next June with 2 years worth of points. So that wouldn't possible unless we borrowed from June 2016 points correct?

Again, thank you for all the help, disneynutz. You've answered a lot of questions.

If you mostly travel in June, you want a UY that is before June or in June. If you travel in June and get an Aug or Sept UY and you have to cancel, you only have one or two months to use your points from the canceled trip. Unless you were able to cancel the trip at least four months before the end of your UY and banked them. But borrowed points could not be banked.

If you have a UY that did not give you 2014 points and you need to use two years worth, you would need to borrow from the next year. Or get a transfer from another member.

What if we got a December UY? We might occasionally travel for an extended weekend trip during the holidays, but it will be rare.

I don't think that you understand why a UY matters. You can only bank points during the first 8 months of your UY. If you need to cancel a reservation and you need to bank, the reservation needs to be in that 8 month period. We have used the UY "free insurance" twice, once when we had a death in the family and once due to a forced job relocation. Both times we canceled the reservations, banked the points and used them for a longer vacation the next year.

If we just canceled, we would have been forced to do something with the points before UY end when they are forfeited.

With a Dec UY, you have until the end of July to bank your points. So if you booked a June trip and had to cancel (more than 30 days out) you could still bank current year points until the end of July. But any borrowed points would need to be used before Dec 1. If you cancel 1-30 days out, your points go into holding and must be used by the end of the UY.

UY is your new calendar. Forget about Jan thru Dec. Your UY calendar is what you consider with planning your trips.

Dec UY is Dec 1 through Nov 30. June UY is June 1 through May 31. Etc.

I think I'm starting to wrap my head around it. Like I mentioned in my previous comment...a December UY might be best if we wanted to take a trip next summer. Otherwise I think we are going to wait a year.

If you buy a June UY now you would get the current 2015 points. Next June you would get your 2016 points so if you were to vacation in June you would have banked 2015 points, current 2016 points and if you needed more would be borrowing 2017 points. So, you'd still have 2 years of points to use. If you had bought earlier and had 2014 points banked they would have needed to be used prior to June 1 2016 anyway so really you're at an ok spot to buy a June UY for your plan.

You could end up having your DVC contract for decades. Would you rather have your UY work best for the first trip? Or the decades of ownership? Once you figure out when you will typically travel, get a UY that works for that schedule. The extra year of points is nice, but not worth risking banking issues later on.

If you want to travel next June, why would you wait a year to buy in? There's nothing wrong with borrowing. Heck, time a trip right and you can bank AND borrow AND use the current year's points. Woo, 3 years of points in ONE fabulous trip. :)

December might very well work for you, but it's extra-complicated to figure out for (especially) the first few years.

We wouldn't wait to buy in, just wait to take our first trip. So instead of taking a trip June 2016, we'd go June 2017.

We plan on having it for decades. But I'm not sure selecting June or December would make much of a difference for us. It's probably better because we are more likely to take a trip during spring break than in the fall.

That really makes sense. !

We just purchased in June 2015, while we are still new to this, I have spent months reading these boards. Tons of excellent advice on here, the main thing that caught my eye was to also consider "peak DVC season" which, if I learned correctly, is around the holidays, Nov-Dec. Maybe Disneynutz or Deb & Bill can help elaborate on this? I'm only mentioning this since you mentioned you might do holiday stays in the future.

Yeah, if we did holiday stays it would be extended weekend trips. We are going to buy Poly for those trips. But they'll be rare. Our work schedules don't really allow for it.
