Has anyone not gotten a wheelchair at a resort?

We will be traveling with my parents next December and although my DM does not want to admit it, she will need a wheelchair. I talked about renting one, but I have heard they are not always in the best of shape, but she doesn't want to do it anyway. A few years ago, we received a complimentary one from the resort and she just wants to do that. She will not hear of me telling her that they might not have one available. I was just curious, has anyone not gotten one at resort when requested? My parents are not planning on going to the parks (maybe one day), just hanging out at the resort, so it would basically be just for getting to the restaurants and the pool. Thanks.

I haven't heard this, but they are on a first come first serve basis. I did see several at the parks that looked like the person using them had just abandoned them. We rent ECV's from offsite now, so we are guaranteed a way to get around.

I know of at least once. We were inline talking to the concierge about things and over heard someone wanting one and there were none to be had.

I have borrowed from the resort for our length of stay several times 2004 thru 2007, at both POP and ASMo. They've always had one available, but it does seem they only have a few. There is certainly no guarantee there would be one available. We usually travel in slower times (late Jan, Sept, late April).

I did decide to rent one from off-site this last trip, however. The loaner ones at the resorts are in pretty rough shape, and one time I was only able to get a pooh size one for the first few days (for a 12 year old). The off-site rental company's equipment tends to be in better shape, and you can choose the size you need. Renting from off-site is generally just a bit less expensive than renting in the parks, but of course borrowing from the resort is free. IMO, it was worth the money to rent and have a little better chair that was more comfortable for DS.

I'ld be a little concerned. I know I saw one from the resorts at Sea World. Karen

there have been people over the years who posted they have not been able to get one. I don't know how often it happens, but it's probably more likely when it's busy since there is more chance of demand then. I have also heard the things that others posted in this thread.
If you do choose to get one from a resort, it's a good idea to take the phone numbers of several companies with you.

I believe you can rent wheelchairs and EVC at Downtown Disney. Charges for rentals very slightly from the theme parks.

Could also rent them from local companies in Orlando. Here's a list of a few places: Care Medical 800-741-2282; Walker Medical 888-726-6837; Apria 800-338-1640; Randy's Mobility 863-679-1550 and Scootarama 877-736-8328

I hope this helps

there is a list of companies (including) the one at boardwalk) on the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

I was not able to get one at SSR when we ask the first few times, finally mid-week we were able to get one (that they let us keep length of stay).

A few years back I was unable to get one at POR. I was told that they are limited and the ones they had were already issued to other guests. I agree to think about getting one from offsite- I don't think it's very costly and at least you're not worrying about availability or standing in line to rent one daily at the parks. ---Kathy

Sometimes they can get one from a nearby resort. Wen we were at Beach Club, the cast members got us one from the Yacht Club. (There was a delay, they brought it to our room at Beach Club Villas).

On my honeymoon back in 2000, I threw my back out with 3 days left of our vacation. We were staying at CBR and my husband called the front desk and we had a wheelchair delivered to our room within 15 minutes. We were able to use it for the remainder of our stay, and took it to the parks and downtown disney with no problems.

Of course you could rent one for her from off-site but tell her it is a resort wheel chair.

We have been able to get a wheelchair every time we asked until July 07. Then we were given a 'brochure' for the rentals on the Boardwalk.
