Has Anyone Had a Baby in the Transverse Position?

Our daughter is due to deliver her first child on New Year's Day. Three weeks ago, the little guy was head down, and now he's got himself in a transverse position, and the doctors are afraid he's too big to get himself turned around. They've talked of trying to manually move him, but there are risks with that. I'm wishing they would just do a c-section. I guess everything will be determined at this week's visit.

Has anyone here experienced a baby in this position or been through having a doctor manually move the baby?

Well my last child tunred sideways about 3 weeks before he was due but turned head down the day he was due and was born the next day. Dr's are having a lot of success turning babies manually and then they will talk c-section if it doesn't work. No need to even talk about it until it is their only choice. C-section should be a last resort option, IMO.

I have not, but I have had several friends that have had doctors try to manually turn them. After their experiences I would NOT let them try it on me.
My sister in law's doctor had her burn some kind of herb by her little toe for a couple of nights. It actually helped the baby move back to head down! She might want to ask her doctor to try that. I can't remember what it's called but transparent might know.

My best friend is in the medical field and she said that a manual move can be extremely uncomfortable and one of the main risks is having the umbilical cord get wrapped around the baby's neck.

I'm just leaving it in the hands of the doctors. I don't want to worry my daughter needlessly. I have to have faith that they will do what's best for her the baby.

My twins were in a transverse position. I heard the risks were too great to try to turn them. It was much easier to just have a c-section.

This is what happened to me. My mom's doctor turned me and I was born with my umbillical cord wrapped around my neck 3 times. I was an extreme case, but from what I understand it was pretty traumatic and they were worried about losing me.

Mom said it also hurt like H E double hockey sticks.

My grandaughter born last February was breech. They tried to manually turn her with no success and my daughter had a C-section.

Believe me I know what you are going through right now, but it will all be ok. When is the baby due?

Just wanted to clarify that my post. It sounds like my sil went to a holistic doctor or some wacko, doesn't it? But she went to a regualr OB-GYN. MY former neighbor at the time was an OB-GYN as well and she and her partners had used the herb as well with good results.

DD was exactly opposite of what she should have been, she was head up and facing out with a foot on each side of her head....no way was she coming out the "regular" way! The OB told us about the "external version" but it 1) extremely uncomfortable and 2) results in emergency c-sections at least 50% of the time. We didn't even try it, just scheduled the c-section and away we went. Much safer for both of us and not a big deal in terms of recovery.

Good luck to your DD, that little guy may yet turn.

ETA: My accupuncturist had us try the herb thing, we felt goofy but at least it was harmles! :rotfl2:

I just went through this ....and I promise it works! My guy was breach the whole time! I was sent to go in and have him turned and I was just dreading this as they told me I would most likely have a C section that day. This was my 4th child and I didn't want to have a C section for the last one if I could help it.

I went to a home party and the girls were all talking. 4 or 5 of them had known someone who had the same problem and when they did it their babies had turned. ..I decided to try it...I laughed and didn't think it would work but it did for me and I am sooooooooo thankful!!!!

lie down in a recliner and put some nice music at your feet....I played childrens music from our church. I would just sit there for a while every day about an hour or so...the baby would just move like crazy! I started on a Sunday and went in for the turning on a tuesday, the day i went in for the turning the doctor checked him and he had turned himself! I was so happy to go home!

Good luck to your DD best wishes that all will turn out well for her!
lisa

good luck to your DD

My youngest DS was like that. He was head down one dr visit and completely reversed the next month. I had an old, very experienced dr and he said he felt confident he could turn him before the delivery date....as long as he did not get "too big". By the next month, DS was "too big", of course.

We planned for C-section about 3 weeks before the due date. When they got in there, he was tangled up in the cord and there was no way he could have been turned. As a matter of fact, dr said it was a good thing he got too big to try because trying to turn him could have caused problems.

I had always dreaded having a C-section but it all worked out fine!

:rotfl: That DS has always done things his own way! :rotfl:

Would you believe I have TWO pregnant daughters - both due with little boys within two weeks of each other???!!!

Daughter number 1 has a scheduled c-section for December 20th. This is her third child - first one born naturally, but with two broken collarbones - second one was a c-section.

Daughter number 2 is due on New Year's Day - first baby. This is the little guy who's decided to lay sideways. I know that a lot of people don't agree with c-sections, but I'd just as soon see this scheduled and not put her or the baby through anything risky. She's a patient at an outstanding facility, so I know they'll take good care of her.

My second child was manually moved during labor and ended up with the cord around his neck three times and no heartbeat. It was by far my worse delivery, but I'm happy to say that he made it and appears in my signature below - coming home from Iraq.

Two of my three kids were born breech - with the first one weighing 8 lbs. and the second one 6 lbs. - and they were both delivered normally.. That was "back in the day" when they didn't really do C-sections unless it was a matter of life or death.. I think that has all changed over the years though with the increase of lawsuits and what-have-you.. There's probably not a doctor out there in the world that would deliver a breech baby normally now..

I wouldn't worry about it.. Still plenty of time for the baby to turn and if not, they'll do whatever they consider to be the safest..

Good luck - and congrats! :flower:

My first and second babies were transverse and we thought a C-section might be needed. Both times the babies turned head down at the last minute. One thing that I did that I think helped was rocking. I would get on my hands& knees and rock several times a day. Then I would sit in my rocker and rock. i don't know if that prompted them to move, but they both did move head down and delivered without a problem.

Well, this baby is not breech - he's actuall laying sideways. According to my research, this is an impossible delivery and they will not allow labor to even begin, for fear of a ruptured uterus. So...unless they can get him turned, he will have to be delivered via c-secition.

I don't know what it is with Mother Nature and that magical 3 number! I had lost a baby between the 2 boys and they think it got strangled by the cord. AND, when they opened me up to take DS, he also had the cord wrapped around his neck 3 times. Weird...

At least you all will have something fun to do in the winter with those close birthdays! :teeth: CONGRATULATIONS!

I was lucky enough to be in the room when my only grandson was born...it was the first time I had actually seen a baby born....I was just too busy to see my own kidlings born! :rotfl:

I remember hearing about this back in "my day". I'll defnately tell her to get on all fours and ROCK!!!

After your own experience I can see why you are wishing they'd just plan a C-section for your dd. I think there are valid concerns regarding manually turning a baby and I'd feel the same way. Best wishes for two successful delieveries and two wonderful new grandsons :)

Well, I think I have a strange case, my son was breech and at the time of ultrasound we found out my uterus has built a small wall down the middle (can't think of the medical name) but they call it heart shaped uterus...So he couldn't turn or be turned. I had to have a c-section but it wasn't because of the breech, he was a preemie. My daughter was my transcerse but I had a scheduled C-section because of my uterus.
