I can't get past the idea that I have to pay them to bid.

If everybody except for the auction winner pays and gets nothing, they must do very well. Unless you are a super sniper, I think you are going to pay for the fun of bidding but you aren't going to actually buy anything.

The site recommends bidding at 2 am when you have less competition. But, they don't guarantee that anything you'd actually want to buy will be up for auction at that time. Given the tendency of those of us on the budget board to stay up until all hours looking for a hotel for 29 dollars, this could become a serious health hazard. . .
